I'm having a strange slipping problem with my 5 speed manual 4wd tranny. when the transmission is in gear something slipps to the point that the car won't move but feels like it's trying to. my first thought was a shot clutch so I pulled the motor today (planning a rebuild so it needed to be done anyway) and took a look at the clutch. it looked fine, definitely good enough to work. the transmission seemed to be solid, no loose shafts or excessive play. I didn't really hear any grinding sounds except occasionally but not enough to suggest slipping gears. any ideas on this? also, the throw out bearing was worn to a taper on the front.

good idea. that hadn't crossed my mind so i'm glad you mentioned it. i'll check it out. will it be obvious like metal shavings and sheared teeth or should I be aware of indicators?

The easiest way I can think of is to jack up one side of the front end at a time, put the car in gear, and spin the wheel.. Also, you could get somebody to help you and watch your axle-nuts spin freely while you try to drive. Or of course, take off your wheels, axle nuts, and hubs, then look at them and see which one is stripped. I'm sure there would be a fair amount of shavings, but I don't know because I haven't stripped one before.. even on my first gen. -Terry

the engine and trans are out of the car at the moment so i'll probably have to take the hubs off and look for shavings and wear. i'll see what I can do about bracing the axle to test the hub for slipping. thanks for the help. much appreciated.

good news. stripped hubs, which means I won't need to track down a replacement tranny. on a side note, thanks for the tranny offers i've received. I'm glad to know there are others that care about justys as a much as I do.
