I just bought a 1990 justy fuel injected last week that had set for a couple of years because the fuel pump went bad. I cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the pump and filter, and changed plugs and wires. The car started right up and ran great i drove it about 200 miles no problems at all. The next day I was going to drive it to work, I got about 1/2 mile from home and it started sputtering and would not accellerate. It starts up and revs good but when you take off it goes about a 100 feet and starts sputtering again. I have ran some seafoam through the fuel filter but didn't help.

Try a new filter. Sitting for 2 years=lots of crud potential in the lines. You may have clogged your new filter really quick when you flushed out all the junk in there. Also, your return lines may have dumped gunk into the tank, which then got caught in the new filter.
New filter=cheap fix. Or at least you'll know that the problem isn't the fuel filter!
Also check that your tank is venting properly. When it sputters to a halt, get out, get down by the gas cap, open it, and listen for a rush of air going into or out of the tank. =clogged vent lines or charcoal canister.
Did you re-use the 2-year old gas after you cleaned the tank? Hope not...
Could also be injector issues perhaps?
All your symptoms sound like fuel filter issues. Seafoam won't dissolve physical crud in the filter. It'll idle fine, but won't flow enough fuel for driving.

I was thinking maybe the injectors are crudded up or possibly a damaged or non-functional cat. Bad O2 sensor would usually cause the CEL to illuminate...not sure about a bad cat.

can you get any readings from the diagnostics? it's not ODB, but search this site and youwill find how to connect the plugs under the dash and see if you get any blinking lights on your dash.
no cost, and the car might know what is going wrong

I took the fuel filter off and it did have a lot of rust in it so I put a new filter on it and went ahead and put a new strainer on the fuel pump because it was dirty too but, that didn't fix it. Tried running with fuel cap off didn't help. Napa has the pressurized cans of FI cleaner that you hook to the fuel rail and run the engine. I am going to try and borrow a hose and try that. Could someone point me in the direction on what wires to hook up to check for codes? This is the first Subaru I have ever worked on so I don't know where to start. Thanks for any help.

I found the link for www.troublecodes.net/subaru/. According to this site for the 1990 Justy the the codes are viewed on the Oxygen Moniter Light, what is that and where is it located. The only connectors I could find under the dash were the two black and one green. If I connect them green to black or black to black the only light I can see flash is the check engine light, and it is just a constant steady flash with no codes.

I cleaned the injectors today and still no luck, if anything seems to be getting worse. I took the air compressor and blew through the fuel lines they seem to flow freely. I tried running the engine with the return fuel line unhooked at the rail and i noticed that no fuel is bypassing at an idle or while revving. Is this normal ? Also borrowed a fuel pressure guage 32-35 psi at an idle and drops to 8-14 psi when it starts acting up. Wired pump directly to battery, no change. Is there anything other then the pump that could cause this?

It's cured, turns out the advance auto fuel pump I installed was bad. Put in a new Napa pump today , cleaned the tank better, installed an extra fuel filter at the engine and it is back to running great.
