I went to get the Justy smogged (for CA) and I failed the NOx test. The guy at the smog shop told me that I need to check my EGR valve to see if it either needs cleaning or replacing. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where it is located?
I have an 87 Justy GL.
Thanks! -Matt

I agree with Stacks on everything except for the bit about rewiring the fan to run non-stop. I think that once you start mothermonkeying electrical components, that is the beginning of the end.
I have mentioned this here before but I think it stands to be told again. My Justy failed one category by a fraction of a percent and I was told by a chum, about this magical agent you can use to fix the problem. I found it, tried it, went back to the emissions center and passed so well that I could almost qualify as a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle). The stuff is called Guaranteed To Pass and it is made by CRC Industries. I paid $9 for it and it has a double your money back guarantee. Follow the directions explicitly! Also, do all that other stuff Stacks mentioned as it is generally good practice to keep your Justy alive.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I appreciate it. jgilk - I have a loosely fitted hose there where those two openings are on the photos you posted. I always wondered what on earth it was. I'll do all the maintenance work and try out the Guaranteed To Pass product since it's only a few bucks. I'll let you all know how it goes. p.s. Dummies live all over the country

Kudos to Stacks. Never assume! I can't believe you would assume that the little dryer hose was exhaust gas recirculation. If it were, wouldn't that mean exhaust was just flowing out everywhere when removed? Think about it, man. 95% of carbureted Justys are missing that hose and run just fine with out it (but run rougher during warm up). You called the air-cleaner a "plenum" but have the nerve to insult all Californians. By the way, what is an "intske" hose? I think it might be the relay located next to the spell-check solenoid or the resistor inside the syntax module.

Well I got all the things sorted I think I needed to but the car failed yet again this afternoon. Same issue this time around and hardly any difference in numbers.
I re-read the replies in this thread and saw something about the cooling system. I have noticed that I am slightly leaking coolant so that may be my issue. I'm going to check it out and fix it. Does anyone think changing the O2 sensor would be a useful thing to do too? The car has about 60k miles on it.

How exactly did you get the car to pass? I'm in the same position you were in. My car failed with NO too high at 15 mph and 25 mph. Also my timing is off.
Please help...

I had to replace both cats and O2 sensor.

Does anyone know what voltage a properly functioning GEN 2 (1990-1991) Justy 0xygen sensor should output?
I can't find info in any of my manuals on what the proper voltage is. I'd like to know that I don't need to replace it, and risk manifold damage.
I'll heat, soak, penetrate, etc. if need be, but there's no point pulling a part and buying a new one if there's nothing wrong.
WHAT'S the Voltage?
Thanks!
