I'm new here so please bear with me. Just bought a 1989 Justy DL 5-speed friday with 104,000 miles on it. It runs pretty good driving conservatively but when I lay on the pedal it kind of chokes and hesitates, lurching so to speak. Also sometimes when taking off in first gear it just fails as if it is flooded momentarily. I have to wait a minute for it to recover and then get my RPMs up again to take off easily. What might be causing this?
Thank you!

You might need a tune up. I would start with plugs, air filter wires cap and a rotor, fuel filter. If you are fuel injected use a few bottles of fuel system cleaner. Look for vacume leaks they might cause some issues like you describe.

Your problem sounds VERY similar to mine. 1989 GL carbureted. I found 2-3 emission hoses off or cracked and leaking. Fixing this helped some. Now I have found the duty solenoid (an electrical device buried in the carb ) has an 'open' circuit, ie no continuity. It should be I haven't fixed this yet, so I can't say for sure if this is the culprit. On my carb, it's the two wires ( White and yellow/black ) coming out through the top of the carb opposite the choke control parts. I can't find any actual accdurate resistance value, but it seems to bee somewhere between about 20 and 40 ohmsbetween the wires, and about a Mohm from either wire to the carb body. Let us know what you find out?
Thanks

Thank you henrypaz and coal, I will check out what you have said and get a tune up. The check engine light comes on occasionally, I reckon that could mean most anything? Is the kind of car they hook up to a computer or is it just a general warning? Should I take it to a Subaru dealer or can any knowledgeable import mechanic deal with it? Excuse my ignorance.

The check engine light indicates that a fault has been detected by the ECU. Even if the light goes out, the code will be stored until it is cleared. Try searching for the procedure to read the codes, it has been covered in another thread. This is not the type that would be hooked up to a computer, (this is a later development, OBD, later followed by OBDII, not applicable to the Justy).
