Hi, I've noticed that my Oil light has been coming on again lately since a trip on the highway yesterday which was one of the hottest days of the year. It comes on and flickers then becomes solid and flickers again with the engine revs during idle. The light only comes on while idling under 1000 rpms. Also, I've noticed that some of my oil has been used up, I just changed my oil 2 weeks ago. I'm using 5w30, should I use 5w40 as the average summer temperature here is over 30 degrees celsius? I'm planning on installing an oil cooler, would this help? I added more oil today, just about a third of a litre, and it helped for about 15 mins. Also when it's idling and the oil light is coming on, I hear a slight tiny ticking knock, but it isn't very distinct just souds like it's running dry. Any suggestions?

It looks like you need to run straight 50 until you can rebuild your oil pump. You don't have a lot of time. That ticking you hear is a bearing that is not getting its fair share of oil.

Yea, this issue actually came to be during a cruise to the Subaru of Canada annual meet with the wrx crowd. Good news is , my car got tonnes of attention at the meet, 300+ cars there . But yea, the poor thing needs a lil break I think. But maybe with a new oil pump, oil cooler, and lightweight crank pulley, I'll be good to go again for the July 24th Subaru bash in Oakville, ON

How much am I looking at for the parts on this? I'm not worried about labour, I could probably have it done fro free, and I get discounts on all parts and labour from many places. But how much would the parts cost at normal pricing? I may just get a discounted 50,000km engine brought in from Japan.

Well, I get about 15-30% discount on parts, and about 15-30% discount on labour, and sometimes free labour. Might not be that expensive. My dad gets discounts from a Japanese engine supplier, he is checking to see how much it would cost to have a almost new engine shipped over from Japan. Thanks to all for all the info, I'll keep you posted as to what I am doing.
