i have an 89 1.2 carbed 4wd that doesnt like running when its cold. it seems to run rich and will flood the engine while its running and then Backfire?? from the engine. all is fine though as soon as the choke turns off. im guessing there is some kind of enrichment device on the choke? is there any way to test/adjust it? anyone else had any similar problems?
thanks

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, and I think tha can be the carburator, but the problem solve when I change the Rotator of the distributor. In the old cars, electrical problems can produce these kind of problems.

A new cap plugs and wires are a really good idea, also the fuel filter probally wont give you problems like you describe, however while you are at it I would change that out to.

i swapped out the auto choke for a manual choke, it helped me. When you say it is fine as soon as the choke turns off, does it gradually get better as the choke backs off? The choke doesn't turn off all at once, rather gradually opens as the motor warms up.

mine will idle at about 1200 rpm while the choke is turned on, and then all of a sudden drop to around 950 as the choke completely turns off, the problem does get better as the choke backs off, looks like its time for a new distributor cap and wires as i changed the fuel filter and plugs about 2 months ago aswell as a k&n airfilter and oil filter, and the oil was changed last friday, ill try the cap and wires, if not i will have to stip and rebuild the carb, been meening to do it for a while so i suppose this is a good excuse.

just a thought....
how does the choke know the engine is cold? i thought it was some kind of vacuum pipe and the engine created less vacuum at cold? if this pipe was split then it would explain my problem to a certain extent but the choke would never turn off??
sorry, just thinking aloud, probably complete garbage!

There is an electrical heater element for the choke, with a bimetal spring inside. As the spring heats, it coils or uncoils, not sure which, and in doing so turns the choke off.

well its had a new dizzy cap, rotor arm and leads yesterday, which means its had a FULL tune up over the past 2 months, and its still running bad, its not as bad since i changed the bits yesterday but its still not right. gonna check the timing although im 99% certain that its ok, otherwise ?? im confused

turned out to be a combination of pretty much everything on the ignition side apart from the coil being worn out or not set up.
