What kind of gas mileage do you get with your Justy?
My 1989 GL (Manual) is only getting about 29 mpg. I am a little dissappointed. I had a ECVT 1992( or 93, can't remember) that did much better. There were times I hit 40 mpg in that one. I would have thought the Manual would do just as well.
It runs well (once it's warmed up).
Curious to hear what other's are getting.

my 91 dl (fwd, 5sp,efi) would average 36 for me; best ever 43 (all highway, very conservative driving, no hills)
my 88 gl/rs (4wd,5sp,carb) averaged around 33-34 under all conditions (but the headgasket was on the way out)
and my 89 rs (4wd,5sp,carb) has always given me 34-35 no matter the conditions (4wd,city,highway)

my 90' GL/4wd 5spd manual has been getting around 35mpg. The fuel gauge is a little shifty so I haven't been able to get a completely accurate reading. My muffler fell off about two weeks ago and I drove the car for about a wwek with it off. I think I was getting better mileage without the muffler. when I put a new one on I saw the fuel gauge drop like a rock. very dissapointing for something like a justy. still a solid car though. can't argue with that.

I have a 94 Justy 2wd 5spd. I get a consistent 40mpg [ city/hwy combined]with the most being 46.1[ I was really trying to see how much I could get.55mph for many miles]It helps that I live in flat Florida & drive conservatively. Had an 88 carbed 2wd 5spd that got 2-3mpg less.

My 88 4wd with a basket on the roof consistently delivers about 36mpg...

Fuel gauge is a little shifty? This is the kind of talk that makes me seriously doubt people who say they get the same mileage in all conditions or claim to be getting better than 40MPG in a Justy. Finding how many miles per gallon you get to a tank is EASY and requires no fuel gauge at all. Finding your average is as simple as doing the following procedure a half a dozen times in a row. When you go to refuel, fill the tank all the way and RESET your TRIP METER. Then it doesn't matter if you drive the tank empty or not... just make sure to fill your tank completely at next refill, make a note of how many gallons went into the tank by looking at the readout on the pump, then look at the number of miles you drove and divide the latter by the former. Example: I top off my tank and immediately reset my trip meter to zero. At the end of the week when my gauge has been reading empty for many days, I go to gas up. I fill the tank all the way and it only takes 8.05 gallons (I never need all 9.2). My trip meter says that I travelled 288 miles. 288 divided by 8.05 = 35.77 miles to the gallon. I'd like to see all of you do this for a month or two and then report back with your findings.

I hit a low of 29mpg with a high of 37mpg, But I usually get 32-34. I have a carb that I am rebuilding so I hope that will get me closer to 40 when it is all said and done. 5spd 4wd.

Wow, I just hit a personal best. On my way back from Oregon coast to Seattle, I got 39.7MPG!! I was mostly doing between 55-70 and this helped. I got 36MPG on the way down but I spent considerable time going 70-80MPH and I have found that my milage drops a bit when I breach 70 for the bulk. I don't have a tach in my DL. Can someone tell me what RPM we're turning at 70? I am guessing it to be around 4000 RPM. Man, if I only had a sixth gear.

Yeah 4000 is about right, I know what you mean about the 6th or overdrive or somthing to drop rhe revs a little.

Last tank was 323.2 miles & it took exactly 7.8 gallons to fill. That is== 41.43 mpg. NOTE= , I drive VERY conservatively & never over 60 mph, flat, rural areas in Florida. I believe that if everyone drove their Justy at speeds no more than 55-60 mph, you would see a great increase.. TRY it & post your results !!

Cole, both 4th and 5th gears in the Justy are overdrives. It's a combination of the 21" tall tires and 4.44:1 gears that kill us/help us.
Esteban, good for you, man. I don't have the luxury of driving 55 on flat, rural roads. Seattle is just like San Francisco; heavy traffic, steep hills, a need for frequent 70MPH stints and really good food. I wonder what's going to happen when I step up to a 13X5.5 and 185/60R13 tires. I have some Jetta/Golf wheels I plan on having center-bored for my Justy. I'll post pics when I have it sorted.

Hey Seattle,
Seems like the center boring route might be a pain in the royals... Did you look into quality spacers with centering lips (like H & R)?
If budget allows, they also have the B series (actually tightens to your existing studs, and features app specific studs on the face!)
Are VW studs/bolts much thicker?

I have no idea what you just said. Who are "they" and what the hell is a B-series??? I don't think what I am trying to do is very difficult. The hole in the middle of the wheel is just a couple of millimeters too small to fit over the tabs on my hubs and I don't believe in grinding off the tabs to fit wheels. This is the difference between hub-centric and stud only wheels. I want to retain the hub-centric design because it is stronger. Speaking of, I'm not sure I know what you meant by those spacers. Are you talking about traditional wheel spacers to reduce offset? Or are you talking about the kind that fill the gap when fitting wheels with a larger center-bore than stock? If so the latter, why would I need those if I am having my wheel centers overbored??? The problem I have isn't that the wheel's center-bore is too big but rather that it is too small. Concerning the nuts/studs issue. I'll be making a visit to some local VW customizers or wheel shops that can assist me.

S,
For whatever reason, I was figuring, that your VW-application either had a larger center bore or that the JUSTY studs were smaller diameter than the lug holes on the rim... no sweat.

Back to the original topic: My justy gets pretty horrible gas mileage. I would expect at least 28mpg from a efi justy. but it seems that I only get about 20-25 and that is mostly freeway driving. I have driven the car over 30,000 miles this way, and have never had to do anything to the engine, it's a strong runner. But I wonder why my gas mileage is failing? Could timing be an issue? Any help is appreciated.

are you sure your odo is correct? i know with my studded snow tires on i'm around 8% off (low) on the reading. thought my milage went to crap then realized that the odometer reading was wrong (compared to the milemarkers)

I'm running a little bigger tires than stock, but shouldn't this make my mileage better if it changed at all? I feel like I have to fill up much more than necessary for such a small car. Even if it is from the odometer, 20-25 gallons is a huge difference. Thanks, Dylan

Bigger tires would mean you are actually covering more miles than your odometer would say, thus it would drop your MPG calculations. You could compensate for this by doing the math to figure out how much your bigger tires are throwing off your odometer readings if you wanted to. I notice that my milage drops when I go to my studded winter tires, but I believe that is due to the increased rolling resistance of the winter tires, as tire size is the same as the summer tires. Your milage is low though, even with the winter tires on I still get about 35mpg (imperial gallons, which would translate to about 30mpg in US gallons).
