I just got a 91 Justy ECVT 4WD. The car runs fine and it drives well once it gets going. The weird thing is when you shift from neutral to either the drive or reverse, there is no tension on the driveline (as in you can shift to either of these and you won't need to hold down the brake). So it idles fine sitting in drive and it feels just like it's in neutral. Once you step on the gas it starts fine. Is this a common thing about these trannies, and what is the problem here? Thanks!

Sounds like the first signs of the dying ECVT crap that Subaru called a transmission. The tranny is not a regular automatic in that there are no shift points but all other aspects remain the same as a regular automatic. The safety lock should prevent you from engaging any position without you foot on the brakes. The car should move if you have it in drive and lift your foot off the brake. That sounds like a really weak transmission.

The ECVT trans does NOT send any power to the wheels until you step on the gas. There's a micro switch on the throttle pedal that tells the trans computer when throttle is being applied. The car shouldn't move at all when shifting into gear, only when applying throttle. Sounds like your's is working normal!

ecvt the transmision is similar to some snowmobiles.. I wonder how many are still working...had serious design flaws that were never addressed...mine became a 5 speed after finding out that the electromagnetic clutch was a $899. import from japan..

This is definitely perfectly normal for an ECVT. It is the only automatic I have ever driven which doesn't 'creep' as soon as you lift off the break. When my Justy's engine blew I had a hell of a time getting used to having a 'creeper' again.
