I bought an '88 Justy 4WD 5 speed in good shape for $600 about a week ago. I've changed the plugs, wires, air filter and have a fuel filter waiting to be installed as well as a carb kit on order.
There are two problems that remain. The car has terrible gas mileage (85 miles to the tank or 12MPG). Also, the car has a problem with "lurching", that is it jerks forward and seems to choke and then jerks forward again. I took a look at the carb and it looks fairly clean, but I have a carb kit on order anyway.
My first question is: Where is the fuel filter located (I just can't find it, even with a Chilton manual)?
What else can be causing the problem other than the fuel filter or carb? The lurching only happens at part-throttle; if i let go of the gas or give it all then the car does not lurch. It feels worst in first and second, by third and up it's not as noticeable. The idle seems high also, (2000RPM).
Has anyone rebuilt the carb on a Justy? How difficult was it, how long did it take?
Thanks, Dan

The fuel filter is located under the car on the left side (driver side in the US) just in front of the rear wheel. If you look in that location you will see a metal plate held in with three 10 mm bolts. Take those bolts loose and the filter and fuel pump assembly will drop down and you can perform your filter change. As to the surging problem...The fuel filter is a good place to start (these never get changed due to their location), but you may also have a vaccum leak. This would cause a low idle rpm and stalling condition that a previous owner could have compensated for by turning the idle mixture screw Rich. This would could cause the surging and poor gas mileage you described. Check all the vaccum hoses and spray some carb cleaner around the carb base gasket and intake manifold ports with the engine running. If you notice a change in rpm (It should go up) then you found the problem. Repair the vaccum leak and re-adjust carb as needed to get the proper fuel mix and idle speed. Hope this helps

Thank you so much! I'll definately give those a shot this weekend! I never would have found the fuel filter without you. The manual I have lists it as being in the engine compartment.

Yeah I know! I had a Chiltons manual before I invested in a factory service manual...Alot of the info in those aftermarket manuals are sketchy at best. I got mine off of ebay about 2 years ago for about $20.00 (It was the best investment I could have made!) Please post what you find out on your Justy. We all have drivability problems at one time or another and what you find may help someone else down the road. Thanks, Jim V.
