Hello,
I was recently given a 94 Subaru Justy Dl 2dr 2wd. The car has 120k on it, wasnt mistreated but it needs a lot of tlc and pretty much every routine Maintenance done to it. After a new exhaust, new cats, and O2 sensor it still failed. I was told the car was running to "lean" and thats as good as the explaination got. Has anyone had a problem getting their justy to pass, or can anyone tell me what I can check and replace. How would I check for a vacuum leak?

i have no clue how to fix this...
you mite check your timing...make shure its perfect ? but if you ad done most of the routine maintenence..it should be ok ?
for vacuum ? i dont knoe to much...i know that we you unplug some the engine stop...and otter will make it work funny ? but ? caint tell you how to pass the emission test ?

Yeah this sucks. the car runs to good to not be able to drive it just cause a smog test. I havent done any of the tune-up stuff yet because I want to return all the parts I bought if the car turns out to be a junker. I checked the evaporative emission control cannister, looks fine to me unless the whole canister itself went bad. Blew through the tubes and such to make sure it wasnt glogged. I cant find the (EGR) Exhaust Gas Recirculation unit under the hood but Im sure with enough patience I'll locate it.(only in CA cars). Theres no Justy owners in California to give me some advice here? I thought I was just gonna teach myself how to tune up a car, not become an emissions specialist. =(

I guess I should do the timing since its been recommended so many times, I have to pay to have that done so I was avoiding fine tuning until I get her to pass smog. Will the timing make that significant of a difference?

if the timing is of...ya...
thats what syncronise the explosion....if its to late..or to urly...it can result in bad emission....but...i am not a mecanic...so i can be completely wrong...
i just knwi that wen i play whit my timing...and plsce it very off..the car sound like i have a race engine management and make back fire...sound cool...but i loose all HP.....and smell alot diferent from the exaust...
it cant be that expensiv to ask a mecanic to make it pass the test ? if you already change the most important parts...im gessing it only need a good tuning..

throw new plugs and stuff in it
I know you can go to Auto Parts stores and buy a can of "sure pass" which is basically straight alcohol
If you can. take the car out, and beat the crap outta it on the highway.
The cat needs to be good and hot.
I'd also change the oil.
And the guy must be full of it. because up here, when a car won't pass, you lean it out so that you get less emissions.
also see if any of the gas companies down there put Ethanol in their fuel. ARound here (ontario) Sunoco puts up to 10% in their fuel, and you get better emissions from it.

Ok. I should have got a diagnostic check right off the bat. Live N' Learn. The person running the diagnostic check noticed that a part of the air intake tube was broken. Theres a little side spout on the hard platic part of the intake, connecting to a black rubber tube running to the P.C.V. valve. The side spout broke but was hard to see. After the guy pointed it out it seems so obvious I cant believe I didnt notice it right away (like those crazy sex inserts in Disney cartoons). Subaru just gouged me for that part for $162.50 so Im installing it tomorrow. This new part plus the major tune up Im attempting tomorrow "should" enable me to pass smog.
