man. you did that the hard way!
seriously....take the tranny out everytime.
all you need to do. is pop out the pins for the front shafts, 4 bolts for the rear, the shifter linkage.
Then just 4 bolts for the rad support and the rad.
Have fun when you go to put the motor back in and get the clutch and tranny lined up. It's a PITA.
and geeze man. break out the power washer and engine degreaser. that underhood is DIRTY

WOW! Your member name RustyJusty really fits! ;D Your engine compartment pics reminded me of the cars I worked on when I lived in the north east 15 years ago. Man!!!, I've been having frozen fastener flashbacks for the last 20 min. Seriously, best of luck on your Justy project! and may the lords of oxidation / galvanic action take mercy upon your soul! Jim

When taking out the gear box, do not forget to drain the oil first. Everything else is a PITA - it will come out just when you remove the cardan shaft.
Anyways, your Justy looks really bad. Hav you ever thought about getting an other one? Where is the heat shield for the manifold anyways? Looking at your ignition cables I'd fear they burn after drivin' some time and parking the car then ...
Greetings, Klaus

Can someone please help me. I'm halfway through pulling the engine out. BUT, how do I separate the halfshafts???
"Just pop out the pins". Which pins??? I think I can see a pin on each half shalf just next to the transmission, but how do I remove them? Do I hammer them out? They look to be sheared off inside the halfshaft.
Once the pins are out, will they just slide off the transmission? I've already disconnected the transverse link so there will be room for movement.
I've started separating the engine from the transmission hoping that I can get the engine out that way, but please reply if you think you can help me.
I have a 4wd Justy and I also can't seem to work out how to separate the rear driveshaft from the transmission.
Thanks!!!

Those pins are a split roll pin, they just tap out with a slender punch. careful or you'll lose them when they pop out the other side. NOW putting them back in... they are not centered on the splines! make sure you put the shafts back together right.. you need to be able to see a full circle of light, otherwise it is possible to jam the pin and not get it out. This happened to me on my old 84 GL, somebody had mashed the pin trying to get it pack in.. was PITA to get back out to replace the shaft!
I just pull the engine/tranny unit out away from the dirve shaft and let the drive shaft fall out of the back of the tranny... As mentioned either drain the tranny oil, or prepare for a spill as the whole unit gets tilted on its way out...
there is a tubular steel guard which snaps onto the output of the tranny to protect the rear seal and u-joint... slide this off beforehand (and let rest on the Drive shaft) otherwise it is like to get bent as the tranny comes between the little sub frame and the fire wall... then you have to straighten it to get it back on..

I'm sure it is possible to remove the engine and leave the tranny in , but as Doit mentioned... it seems just as easy to pull the tranny... there is not alot of room in there for lateral movement, but it you take the top rad/front hood support out... there's tons of room to go forward with the whole thing, even in the short Gen 1 bodies....

Good news! I got the engine out. I separated it from the transmission. I'd already removed the manifolds so there was plenty of room for movement.
My next issue... Getting the darn crank pulley off. I should have loosened it before the engine came out. I guess I'm going to have to make some kind of flywheel stopper.

impact wrench will make quick work of the crank pulley.

I just use one of those things with a plastic handle and a rubber strap that you slide to size around the crank pulley to hold it, then put the breakerbar on the nut. It's a cheap tool from BigLots or any autoparts store. Mine is a craftsman from sears.
