Well, last weekend's Heart of Darkness rally tore a CV boot to bits and when we got to a quiet bit of road I could hear that all is not well. So now I need to replace the front right CV joint, I guess the whole halfshaft is the way to go.
Has anyone replaced one of these at home? The Chilton's process is a bit more involved than many small cars and it seems I need some special tools. Can I do this in the carport or am I going to get in over my head?

Out of curiosity, what does the noise the CV joint started making sound like?

The noise was mostly a whiring or rubbing sound. Not the usual clicking of a failing joint but enough to make us look under the car. When we found the torn boot and removed a few stones and dirt we found play in the joint. We drove it carefully 300km home with no problems but the whirring did get a little louder with time.

its what i believe you call drive shaft ?
there is one for each wheel...
yes you can do it in the carport...thats what i do now coz im use to do it...but...its still a paine in the ass...
You will need to remoove the balljoint...be carefull not to brake the treads wen you hamer it out...use a punch to hit in the center of the axel so it wont brake the tread...i use a zip gun and its out in 10 sec....
to get it back in...(i suggest that will your at it..change the bearings)
the way i do it is by using the big nut to pull it in.... thats way you need some good tread!!...we made some spacers of different thickness... tite the bolt all the way....then take it out...place a spacer...tite the bolt all the way...take it out...place a bigger spacer...tite the bolt all the way...ect ect ect...untill the axel sit tite at his place...
Often wen sending them to be rebuilt...we get them back whit not enoug tread to instal it ?...i also find the rebuilt cv dont last as long .....so i hunted down the scrap yard for stock oem...and they do a much better job.

you don't have to take out the ball joint. that is the stupid way of doing it.
First take out the pin at the transmission.
then remove the bolt where the control arm bolts to the chassis. give the control arm a couple whacks with a hammer to pop it outta the mount.
Just give a tug on the brake rotor and the cv will slide off the tranny.
Then just pull it outta the hub assembly.
As far as putting it back in.
Just line it up with the splines, and get a buddy to get under the car and whack the end of the cv shaft with a hammer and drive it into the hub..
Once you get it in far enough to put the conical washer and nut on. Just tighten the nut and it will pull it in.
Then just slide the cv back onto the tranny. Make sure you have the holes lined up properly.
I have changed a CV in my car in about 20 mins with no air tools, while the car is on jack stands.

"remove the bolt where the control arm bolts to the chassis. give the control arm a couple whacks with a hammer to pop it outta the mount."
I think thats what im doing...ok... ist not removing the balljoint....but unscrewing the bolt of the ball join going to the front table...do you actualy think im stupid enoug to take the balljoint out for this ? any way its pretty much the same thing...
"Just line it up with the splines, and get a buddy to get under the car and whack the end of the cv shaft with a hammer and drive it into the hub.."
i dont want to argu whit you since you seam to know far more ... but this is the way to brake your new cv joint... It will bust out the C clip thats inside...not a big deal to fix...but if you dont notice the damage....we broke many trying to get them in that way....at least 4 not (all the same time but still...somtime it work somtime it dosent work)....before we decided to go whit the spacers....it mite be easyer on older justy...but whit mine...on all 4 corners...its hell!!
trust me...i spended all last summer changing those freaking cv joint...and i did get professional help....now whit practice i can do it in 20min...but it suck...i hate it!!

I replaced my left cv joint within last two months. It is a pain in arse. I suggest using a slider hammer as not to damage anything, but other than that your on the right track. Well, i wish you the best of luck replacing it 'cause you'll need it

I changed mine last month. Took me 3 hours to do, not knowing the correct way. The concentric rings going though the brake disc would slide and jam everytime. Took some thick grease to hold it in place. Pulling with shims works till a point, from there on you have to hammer away. It is a PITA to have to go through this each time a CV boot gets ripped, and they do very often, especially the one close to the exhaust pipe. It gets brittle, and cracks every two years. Still found no other way to replace it without popping off the whole shaft.

I can't say for sure, but I doubt the shafts from any other model will fit. Also, the shafts on 87-88 are slightly different on the one side, can't remember which, from 89 up I believe both shafts are the same. I have a Subaru Justy parts book if anybody needs to confirm this (or any other part interchange).

Mine kinda makes a weird sound when accelerating around a corner and going up a hill.. Thinking it is the same sound and might be a stuck rotor. Does it take a special tool/puller too get the hub off and a press too press it back on?

I thought this idea might be helpful to some of you removing and installing axles. I have done it on two Subarus so far, my 87 turbo wagon and my 89 Justy GL 4WD. What i did was to slowly and evenly dress the axle down where it goes through the wheel bearings, using some emery cloth from the hardware store, i just sit down with the axle between my knees and polish a little evenly all around the shaft. It took about 20 minutes to get the shaft to easily slip into the bearing and after that, it is easy to remove / replace as needed. Of course, I "tried" the fit every minute of so, so that I would know where to concentrate my polishing.
Does it work? Yes, I have been driving the Justy for 10 years now without any problem. The difference in size is probably less than .001 inch?
Another, but related issue ( I think ?)
I have a question about how to clean a CV joint when the boot has broken and you want to replace the grease with clean. Can i use brake cleaner spray? Just blast it out good with 1 or 2 cans maybe? Let dry good and add the grease? thanks for any advice re that.
Another thought re that torn boot : I have read several places re fixing a tear with either Shoegoo or E6000 adhesive, which some say is the same thing, but Shoegoo being a bit thicker and stays where you put it better. I have a new boot for '78 Civic that i think i will slit and try to use, and i will need to glue it.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this method? I will appreciate any advice coming my way. Thanks to you in advance .
