Although my Justy normally runs like a top ( starts fast and runs strong and smooth ) I've been having a few intermittent stalling/won't readily re-start issues lately, with my 1989 carbed 4WD GL .
I might drive 20 miles or 5 miles before it quits. Once at highway speed. Another after climbing a hill and just sitting stopped at idle. It seems like after enough time sitting on the roadside and worrying and pretending to troubleshoot the issue, the engine will start and I get home ok. This is almost OK, but maybe one day it won't restart?
Once i smelled a lot of fuel on restarting. Another time after letting it set for several hours, I heard what I first thought was the duty solenoid in the carb clicking, but I was not sure. My hearing is not so good. Then I thought it might be the fuel pump making that noise.I got out of the car and banged the fuel pump cover with my fist a few times, and when I got back up to try to start it, all was quiet. She started and ran well for the 20 mile trip home.
It's my understanding that the EFC unit lets the fuel pump run only three seconds prior to sensing the distributor signal showing the engine is running. Someone also said the fuel pump runs until it builds up enough pressure then it stops. Do these things both happen? Would the fuel pump 'run-on' if it was getting weak or the fuel filter was plugged?
This car has habitually made a clacking noise from the engine room when first starting on cold days. i think it's the Float Chamber Vent solenoid? It might clack 10-20 times then stop, then do it 3 or 4 more times like that. I mention that because it has done it lately when it's not cold at all. Just a few clacks. is that a meaningful clue.?
Sorry for being so 'wordy', but maybe the info would help someone guide me to the solution. I'll appreciate any wisdom / knowledge you can throw my way. ( I have an FSM on hand if you want to reference that. )
Thanks for helping me keep Her on the road a few more years. ( I've had her 15 years so far. Oh the rust we've seen ! )
A FEW DAYS LATER:
Changed the fuel filter. ( Something loose and rattling inside the old one. I'll cut that open later. ) She starts and runs OK in the driveway. Ran about 5-10 mins. Shut off and re-start OK.
I noticed there is NO 3-second pre-start noise from the pump. Until a few weeks ago it was always there before starting and very audible. Now quiet. When running I think I can hear the pump pulsing continuously though. Using a steel rod placed on the shield.
So-----? Pump must be running. Why no 3-second pre-start pulses? I guess that 3-second pre-start signal comes from the ECU. Wonder what's changed lately? ECU not getting the needed input signal? From where?
Any ideas anybody?
Thanks.
