Engine was running well until the weather started dropping. Live in warm-weathered AZ so it never gets crazy cold but it's definitely running rougher and this morning freaked me out because it was really dragging and then when I would give it more gas, it would sometimes start to accelerate and sometimes feel like it's dragging more, seemed inconsistent. All of a sudden, I would start seeing what appears to be white smoke from directly under the car when I was sitting at lights. Anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this? There is also more than usual white smoke coming from tailpipe for the first few minutes after startup! Thanks for the help!

Have you verified the choke is working properly? How about a tune up? Spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter. Next I would check the timing, then adjust the valve clearances. Another possibility is the temp sensor on the intake manifold, although I'm not sure if that could cause it.

I have not looked into the choke too much although I've noticed the autochoke seems inconsistent. I have cleaned up the carb, replaced the air filter and changed the oil (there is a noticeable leak which seems to be the valve cover gasket so I'll try to replace that). All of the problems have gone away if I let the car warm up for awhile and it only happens when it's cold it seems so I've since focused on fixing the braking system but am ready to dive back in to the engine issues (cooling system doesn't work correctly either and car overheats if sitting in traffic before cooling when I'm driving)
Thanks for the help and suggestions, so much info on here!

With the engine off and cold, remove the air filter housing. The choke will probably be partially open. Press the gas pedal to the floor once and release. The choke should completely close. Start the engine. The choke should slowly open fully in about 5 minutes. It's pretty common for the coil spring inside the choke housing to break. Does your radiator fan come on when it's hot?

I'll give that a try, I've been having to give it a little gas to get it to turn over so maybe the choke is having an issue. Regarding the radiator fan, I've heard it come on but it seems really inconsistent and most of the time the engine heats up and I don't hear it at all! Also, there's a leak somewhere in the cooling system I need to find. As long as I'm not stuck in traffic, the temp is really stable, and even then it only creeps up slowly. Rush hour is where I start to get a little worried!
