Hello i have a 88 justy that will not go into 4wd. I bypassed the solenoid and directly hooked up the vacuum to the trans. but still nothing on the dash and i had the car on jack stands no rear wheel movement. dropped it down went forward and reverse still nothing. I now think the 4x4 actuator if thats what its called is bad. thing on side of trans. any tips. if not were to get replacement parts.

did you get the right hose hooked to vacuum? there are 2. one to engage, one to disengage.

Also the side not hooked up must be vented to allow the diaphragm to move.

I tried both lines and what do you mean by vented. I just disconnected the main vac line then disconnected one of the two lines to the trans and connected it with a coupler while leaving the other vac line from trans connected to soleniod. If that makes any sense lol.

I still got nothing after trying that. Bad actuator?

have good vacuum on your donor hose? If it's the diaphragm, typically you will feel vacuum on the other side. So if you hook up one line to vacuum, and stick you thumb over the other, if it's blown, you'll feel it. If not, could be something internal jammed. FWIW... I have a transmission sitting on the floor right now. I was just now able to engage and dissenage the 4wd by sucking on it! Heard a nice audible "clunk" and could hear the diaphragm working... Try it!

no noise? Can you hear air moving when you suck on it? there is no resistance? If so, yeah, it will be the diaphragm, and replacing looks to be fairly straight forward. If you get resistance sucking on it, it must something mechanical. And then I have no idea what to say. take it apart? Again, looks like removing the actuator is pretty easy. And I'm sure you could find a used one. I am thinking about tearing this transmission apart... if so I might get be willing to part with the actuator.
maybe someone else has had a similar problem and will chime in.
if you are using the "suck on it method" you should still be able to feel vacuum on the other hose if you hold your thumb over it... indicating a blown diaphragm

first let me say thanks so far for all the replies... encouraging to keep trying. Sry mad matt for some reason that posted twice and i hadnt tried what you had said. i have sucked on the hoses before and it had resistance as if the diaphragm wasnt blown. i have not tried putting my finger over the other hose but i doubt it will have a vac leak. when there is a vac leak while changing hoses the engine runs noticeably different. and i havent had that when they are hooked up to either trans vac hose. Sounds mechanical and yup rip it apart.
