I am unable to find a front left cv axle for my 88 4wd, so next best option is to rebuild the one I have. It is not clicking at all, so Im hoping that this will go smoothly.
I'm hoping that some one out there has done this already, and that they can give me some pointers. Or at least tell me where I can get the replacement bearing seals, and spring pin that I will need.
I promise to post pictures and a nice write up when I do the rebuild.
Any one have any help they can offer?

Did you try rockauto.com? There appears to be gen 1 left and right front axles on there.
I haven't heard of anyone on here rebuilding them, but I could be wrong.
Another option to look at, especially if you plan to keep your justy for awhile, is converting to gen 2. Off the top of my head i think it's axles, hubs and the jack shaft on the passenger side. You'd need to create a mount for the jack shaft because your engine block doesn't have the bosses for it. I know this has been done before and you could find details on here with some digging.
If you convert to gen 2 you will have more robust axles and hubs, more readily available axles, and equal length axles left and right.
Madmatt might be a good person to ask about the conversion. He has a gen 1 rally car that he's put a lot of gen 2 parts in.

I like that idea quite a bit. What year does gen2 start? I just saw a cheap '89 justy on cl today, I could grab that one and swap out the parts perhaps.
Thanks for the info Dave, you're always a big help.

[EDIT]: Ok I actually read the CL posting, and it turns out that the '89 is a 2wd model. Can I use the parts off of that car?

Gen 2 is 89-94 so yes, that car would work. It doesn't matter that it's 2wd, the front suspension and axles are the same as the 4wd.
Also, if it has 13" wheels it may have bigger brakes that you can use. I'm not sure if the 2wd versions got the bigger brakes though.

hollandjusty posted pictures of his axle conversion bracket in the past. Maybe you can dig one up in an old thread or PM him, though I am not sure he is on here much anymore. In addition to the things Dave mentioned, I think you also need to swap out the front wheel bearings. If I remember correctly the Gen 2 bearings fit in the Gen 1 knuckle by the ID is larger to accommodate the larger diameter Gen 2 axle shaft.
Also, if your front axles are actual OEM Subaru axles then they are worth keeping and rebuilding. It's easy to remove the inner double-offset joint for cleaning. Clean, grease, and reboot and you should be good to go for many tens of thousands of miles or kilometers as the case may be. If they are aftermarket with ball bearings instead of needle bearings, they may also be worth rebuilding.
The Gen 2 conversion is still the best, but if the rebuild is an option it will keep you going while you source the parts for the axle conversion.
Also, as Dave mentioned the Gen 2 brake upgrade is worthy as well, but you can't run 12" wheels, which doesn't look to be the case on your car.

Ferox, can I switch everything over from the gen 2? Knuckles, axles, brakes, etc?
For that matter, how much gen 2 stuff can I use in my car? Id like to have as many spares on hand as possible. My guess is that the engine and its components are the same. Aaand, the '89 looks like my car with a different front end so I would also guess that a lot of the interior is compatible.
Am I too optimistic?

-PYes you can switch all of those over. Front struts will switch over. The rear struts on the Gen 2 will probably have larger lower attachment bolts, but if the Gen 2 is fwd they may be the same as the Gen 1. Rear diff on a 4WD model will swap and the transaxle will swap. For that matter the whole engine will swap just check the engine mount. Rear suspension springs and sub-frame assembly will swap. I suspect but cannot verify that steering components will swap. Some Gen 2s came with a rear anti-sway bar that requires swapping out the rear control arms and installing mounts to the Gen 1 unibody. Some interior may swap, but I can't verify any of that. You will probably have to compare directly.

Western Washington. My friend has them and sells them actually but he never checks his computer to get on this forum.
Also, just two days ago, a customer of mine that runs an auto parts distribution warehouse promised me that he can get any Subaru CV axle. He swears they're not "white box" parts or "semi universal". they're legit.
His company is called Seattle Automotive Distribution Inc. they're located in Auburn WA
