dear Justy fans, I have a 1991 ETCV and someone has forced my Justy with a heavy trailer (over a ton), trying to go uphill. Now, only when engine is running , impossible to move gear shifter from N to anywhere . Engine starts in N position normally. In P position starter motor turns engine too slowly, like sth was blocked or rather braking...
Thanks if anybody has a good idea !?

It's like there was a clutch not searating. In P there seems to be a gear half engaged, that's why it turns slowly and wants to advance with the force of the starter motor. and if a try to force from the N position into R or D I get the "dentist" grinding gear box sound. :-(
Is there a way to "adjust" the "clutch" ?

Do you want the bad news or the bad news.
The clutch is basically a electromagnet with iron powder between the drive and driven plates. Neutral is a physical disconnect of the transmission from the clutch. Neutral and Park I think work the same, only one locks the transmission.
Maybe your selector cable is shot.
But I think they fried your clutch, the internal drive belt, or both.
This isnt even a choice in the FSM, i bet your clutch over heated, but first check the fluid (burnt dark?), check the cables. Can you easily move the selector with the car off?

Nipper, thanks for your reply. I am amazed by the help this site is giving.
First, to answer your questions: - the oil is still "yellow" - the shifter moves freely when engine is off - cables seem to be ok
There is some interesting development: after reading the manuals posted here, I decided to have a look at the brushes. One was stuck. So I cleaned them and made them move freely. Now I can start in P Position and the engine turns freely (so the clutch is now free, at least for the P and R) Yes I can use reverse (R) normally now; however cannot move shifter to D or Ds, clutch doesn't seem to work there.
Does this indicate what the next problem could be to those who know those gearboxes?
Thanks for your lights!!

These are extremely simple transmissions, so of course I am having problems trying to figure out what is going on. Do you have any idiot lights lit on the dash? The Justy reverse gear mechanically is the same a drive. In theory you can do 90mph in Reverse. If it moves in R it should move in D. Have someone shift the selector while you watch the cable movement on the tranny. I am wondering if all of this is just a fluke and your cable is shot.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate!
No lights on the dashboard. I checked the cable from the outside, around the top of the gearbox near the starter motor, all looks normal to me.
Seems like the "clutch" for D/Ds does not work, only the one for P and R (which is a different "system" !?)
If i start in P I can move the shifter to R and on to N, but not further to D/Ds. If started in N position, the shifter doesn't go anywhere. With engine off the shifter moves freely in all positions (cable and shifting mecanism ok !?)
