It's finally happened. I have got around to putting a fuel injected motor into my 1988 Justy. I didn't build an oil pan and lighten my flywheel for nothing! There are some key advantages to going EFI. Better fuel mileage, consistent power band and easy to diagnose. The unforeseen advantage is now my 1st gen is running equal length axels with a 2nd gen transmission which (according to wikipedia..) has different gear ratios which should give my car a higher top speed, which is important if I decide to road trip. Here are some pics. Almost ready to come out! Gaping hole. Old engine and transmission New engine and transmission. (Note the oil pan!) Installed and ready for some wiring. Tomorrow I will do the wiring and hopefully get it running. Then, clean the engine bay and make it presentable.

Dammit Terry! Here I talked myself out of an EFI swap for my '88 and now you are making it look too easy not to do it. Of course I don't have a gantry, but still! Please give us detail on the wiring portion. A comprehensive write-up would be super awesome for Justy owners for years to come if you are so inclined. Nice work, I am very interested in the conversion process.

Thanks ferox. I got the car running today and drove it home with the ECU underneath the hood and a big rats nest of wires. I will write up how I do the wiring when I get it all finished, right now it's just temporary so I could get the car home.. The engine is making a concerning noise when I rev it.. It sounds spooky, like a dry rod bearing. I really hope it is something dumb like valve adjustment or just a rattle somewhere. More pictures to come as the work gets done.. I really hope I don't have to pull the pan off again to put in a set of bearings... A couple questions for EFI guys. How do you set the ignition timing? Does anybody know what the fuel pressure is supposed to be?

Progress update. After removing all the wiring I have began the tedious task of beautifying my work. To give you an idea of what I'm dealing with, this is how I drove the car home. Then after leaning down the harness by removing excess wires I didn't need and organizing their lengths as well as their orientation to the way they will be run in the car, I ended up with a harness that looked like this. Finally, after drilling a hole in my firewall to the correct size for the grommet I used I was able to run the harness over the engine and get prepared to hook everything up. Note that there are no sensors or connectors on these wires, this is so I can build the lengths perfectly in the engine bay and not have excess all over the place. The other reason is I would not be able to put the grommet on the harness with any connectors on it. Now I need to find power inside the cab for the relays and tuck everything up where the old computer was.

I think I am the only one participating in this thread. My used EFI engine runs beautifully and has insane amounts of power. My 2nd gen transmission has wonderful gear ratios. However, my used engine also has a nearly spun bearing on #2. So if anyone has a bottom end out there to donate to me... (just a crank that does not need to be re-ground) Project is on hold until I can have a reliable engine. It however did not stop me from grabbing second gear with the 12" rubbers on fire.

how much do you think you have spent on the swap all together. I am getting ready to buy my third justy and I love the look of the 1st gen justys but I am going to boost it so efi is a must

Oh this is so awesome! I really wish I could find a nice 1st Gen Justy and do this as well.

The first step is to find a wrecker with a doner EFI car and ask them what they want for the whole swap. Or at least a loaded cylinder head and all the electronics. This swap cost me very little because I know the guy who owns the wrecking yard and I went and worked a couple days for him, so I guess a few hundred bucks in labor. The biggest thing to consider is your time invested. Even with a hoist and knowing exactly what I was doing I've probably put almost 24 man hours to get it to the running, incomplete stage it's currently at. The wiring is very time consuming, and in order to replace the transmission you need to drop out the suspension.
However if you plan to re-use your transmission the motor is not difficult to get out and back in, you could shave off some time there.
It is definitely a worth while swap if you decide to go that route. It runs fantastic, I can get in and start it on a cold morning and just start driving and it has loads of power compared to the carb engine.

Thank you for your insite now I just have to decide if I want to put that much time into just the motor swap or just settle for a second gen

That sounds pretty awesome... My dream is a silver FWD GL 5spd 1st gen with the drivetrain from my '93 FWD. Since I am willing to do all that, a 4WD would work in a pinch.

Update Got bored at work and built my exhaust. 2" from the engine back with a resonator and a flowmaster muffler. Sounds mean. Old New It's a little rude when the rpms get above 5g

Hello.. hello.. hello.. Do I hear an echo? It seems I am the only one interested in my swap. Oh well, I am used to talking to myself. My engine has been removed and is at the machine shop getting romanced. The #1 rod bearing had almost spun, all other rod bearings AND main bearings were showing copper. The oil deflection ring on all three pistons were seized solid and the balance shaft chain is sloppy as all hell. The valve train is coated in a thick layer of sludge and scale. Drum roll please.. This man never changed his oil! I have also modified my oil pan once again with another (yes, two!) drain plug so I can dump the oil properly. I will get pictures when I have the chance.

It seems I am the only one interested in my swap. Count me in as super-interested. I have just been very busy lately. If you can swing the discretionary time to put together a wiring tutorial or diagram this would be a legacy [Edit-not to be confused with the Subaru Legacy] post for Gen I owners for years to come.

Yeah... I am really impressed and have wanted to do this since I first sat in a 1st Gen. Just been slammed at work. So busy I basically go home to change/shave/nap and head back in. That exhaust looks nice. I am planning on having one done up soon. 2" with a muffler is probably a good amount of backpressure. I removed my back box and took the car for a drive - sounded cool but no torque at all. With the muffler it actually has a nice low end. Any chance you could make another one of those "cat adapters" for sale? It looks nice, and it would be a great way to install a replacement cat. No way no how would someone make one for me here, and I have not yet picked up a MIG.

If you could get me a flange I would make you one no problem. I do not have any extra flanges at this time..

Update. I was at the South Island Engines (here in Victoria) working tirelessly on my engine. The guy there knows his stuff. This is what I got accomplished. He opted for 3 angle valve seat grinds to increase flow into the cylinders, amazing stuff. Vales and valve train components in a box! Another update on my car, I got new wheels! Yea. Spruce up that sexy 1st generation. 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit 13" wheels with some low pro rubber, got a great deal in a private sale. They look good in my opinion and fit nicely. Some front hub modification was needed but all together I an happy with the results. (yes the 12" wheel is on the front in that picture.) Terry

No way! I was going to buy those wheels, but then when I went to look for the ad it was gone. I would have painted them flat black. Awesome swap. Your car is basically my dream Justy. I have a spare EFI engine and 5 speed tranny, hopefully I can find a non running first gen for cheap to do this swap myself. (or with help )
