Justy Peeps!--
Just wanted to say that I put a new ( $107.00 no exchange required ) Chinese front axle in my '89 4WD hatchback, and it began to click and clack worse than the one I took out! Within a month! It is disappointing, but has a one year exchange. I got it from NAPA , so you all will know to avoid. Only consolation was I did a thorough brake job on it at the same time. The brakes work OK--now have some pulsation on rapid downhill stopping. Chinese rotors from Advance. (Good manufacturing of cast iron parts requires seasoning, which I am sure they do not allow time for. ) There must be something better than these parts, but cheaper than Subaru parts (if you can get 'em.) Anybody know?
If I can remember to do it, I will edit this post when I find out how long that axle really does last.
Easy! henry

At that price...you got gouged by NAPA, IMO. I actually would try one with that warranty and if it cost $65.00, or so. Mable. "Chinese rotors from Advance. They are a terrific Pacific NW supplier of car parts (not just brakes actually) and my advice is to stay away from their Chinese brand (Dura) and go straight for their premium stuff called Centric or 300. I have had wonderful experiences with them and their products. Also, it is important to bed-in disc brakes before regular use. I just did a brake job on a 2004 Scion xA yesterday and will complete the 2nd half of the bedding-in today. Without getting into a huge chemistry lesson I will simply explain that it isn't your pads grabbing the discs that stops you: it is the pads grabbing the pads that stops you. Your rotors (discs) have a level of porosity and need to soak up some liquefied pad material but if they get too hot too fast they will simply glaze over and you will have poor performance thereafter. To bed in street brakes, take the car with brand new, unused brakes to a road that has little or no traffic. Get up to 30PMH and then brake quickly down to 5MPH but not not stop. Accelerate back up to 30MPH and wait several minutes before repeating. Continue to do this at least 8 times (a dozen is better) and if you must come to a dead stop then brake until you are at 5MPH and then use your parking brake to complete the stop and to hold the car still. Avoid using the brake pedal at a dead stop or you risk having a spot of microscopic goo in one place on your rotor that will cause imbalance and pulsations thereafter. The second phase of bedding in is done at highway speeds and will consist of a half-dozen hard braking from 55MPH down to 30MPH. This is heat cycling your rotors in a controlled fashion and has afforded me excellent performance and excellent longevity for all disc brakes for the more than fifteen years I have been doing it.Side note: one of the reasons I left Meineke is that the owner refused to let my bed-in brakes because it wasn't cost efficient for the store. I'm not saying there was a good guy or bad guy but I decided that a businesses' bottom line didn't run parallel with my ethics.

Thanks to all you members of the Justy clan! I have bookmarked all those links for future use. Seattlejusty--I see life is more complicated than I had thought. I have a lot to learn yet. Very interesting point you made. (I too once worked in a brake shop--just learning then. I failed to grasp the importance of the little copper washers for the banjo-fittings. The customer came right back, too! Bossman not too happy wit dat! Ahh---we live and hopefully learn.)
Thanks to all!

I Just thought I'd say that Chinese axle is still rolling along now in 2019. It seemed to quiet down after awhile for some reason. That thing is still going !!! ( March 2022 ) Started to clack a bit / too much, so I ripped off the boot outer and cleaned with brake cleaner, and mashed in a tube of black (Sta-Lube ? ) CV joint lube. then made a boot out of Gorilla tape / string / liquid rubber. That's been holding up for over a year now. Beats removing an axle, innit?
gotta keep those old Justys rolliin'
