Hey rally folks, please have a look at my post in the builds section about possibly resurrecting the mighty '88.

Not sure, but decided to post here since this is really rally related, not just builds. I got to put some time in on Justy last week, and the resurrection has really begun. This past summer, we stripped the car to a shell, and then hummed and ha'd if it was worth putting time into. I bought the car in 2003, and it had some rust issues. I wasn't really thinking "rally car" and I patched it up fast and dirty. Then after having driven it for a winter I thought, "damn this WOULD make a fun rally car" and so it was built, without re-addressing the rust. We raced for a couple of seasons then it sat on blocks. Several years, have passed, and we did some body damage too. Landed on the nose and bent the sub frame, it was straightened and somewhat reinforced, but not enough. Really it's in bad shape. The underside was sand blasted, to have a good look, and then painted with an epoxy. We'll repaint with the epoxy when we're done welding, then paint the shell white. Easier to see the problems in the future. It will still have the orange body work! The Tin worm has really taken hold... but I pulled out the MIG-based pesticide, and went to town. Ugly! More Ugly Rocker ugly Rear subframe ugly Stronger Prettier Way stronger! Happier! So over half the car has new metal in the important places, still have a bit to do. Another day and the shell should be done, then we need a couple days to strenghten/replace/rebuild the suspension. Then we go fast in the woods again!

Hey Folks... I meant to post this but forgot all about it... A few months ago I got a good bit of work done on the shell. Now we're ready for re-assembly. Maybe later this month if I can get back to the car. I now have local shop space, so once it's a roller again, I can retrieve it and finish up quickly... Uglyness More Hand hammered inner rocker Welded in (this was a crucial area to be strong, as the cage feet mount on the other side...) Outer rockers added Shifter mount area rotten out... So stole the floor from a 2nd gen car, raised it up 3 inches so the shift lever will be closer to the wheel. Pure white makes problems easier to see, and at service I can say "hit the white parts with a BFH" or as you will see "hit the black parts"! Suspension subframes rebuilt and black ("hit the black parts") Rear trailing link all rotten, needed new bushing... replace with hand fabbed mount and spherical joint, problem solved. Hopefully headed back in a bit to bolt it all up... Race by the fall! Matt

Oh and just thinking of some fun tid bits...
So where unsprung weight is key, I spent some time looking at 1st and 2nd gen front suspension.
The car will now run 2nd gen axles (beefier shafts and bigger nuts..) with 2nd gen bearings (uh duh) in the first gen spindle which are MUCH lighter... I didn't weigh them, but there is a noticeable difference.
2nd gen brakes bolt up to the caliper mounts, so I'm getting lighter spindle with all the good bits of the 2nd gen stuff...
I love legos

Are you sure 2g bearings fit in the 1g knuckles? I always thought they didn't, therefor I have been contemplating switching whole knuckles when I do my brake/axle upgrade.. Let me know on this one. The car looks good. I like the work you've put into it. How are you rolling the metal for the wheel wells and rocker panels? Just by hand, english wheel? That trailing arm bushing sucks. I had one go in my car, and I never replaced it.. I just ended up sleeving it with a piece of metal so it wouldn't dance around and since then have been trying to ignore it.. even though it groans and moans with suspension articulation. More pics!! Armageddous
For sure they fit, as I've already swapped everything over. I had some spare knuckles from a Gen 2 parts car, and so used the bearings from there, and put them straight in! No problems
English Wheel I wish! No this was all done with a hammer on the edge of a dirty work-bench, not even a proper sheet brake, hence the wavy line in the rocker... oh well, flat black rockers and fender flares for the win!
I think the trailing arm fix will work for us, but it's a spherical joint now, so I really wouldn't want that on the street... I think that was the WORST area of the car for rust, between the rockers, the trailing arm and the structural members... I spent more time there then anywhere.
Streetman, thanks!

Are you already running a Gen 2 engine block or have you devised another way of dealing with the different passenger side axle lengths between Gen 1 and Gen 2?

Hey Ferox,
Yes, we have been running a Gen II block for a while, desperate times... couldn't get a Gen I block. In fact I think I only ever had the original Gen I block (which suffered from a free spirited rod incident), and just collected Gen II motors after that (keeping the Carb'd Gen I head).

Yes, we have been running a Gen II block for a while, desperate times... couldn't get a Gen I block. Damn, I was hoping you had a clever fix for that. The biggest mistake I made when rebuilding my '88's engine was not converting to a Gen 2 block.

Nice (re)build Madmatt!
@ferox, I'm currently running a gen I engine in a gen II body with equal length axles. I'll sent you a pic soon of my "clever fix". Grtz

Question for the masses...
Does anyone have a FSM with the transmission schematic? could you scan and post?
I'm looking for some answers on why Wiki says 5.2 final drive and 3.7 rear diff. Basically what is the front final drive set up, and how can I get a higher overall final drive.
Thanks.

Okay!
So the car is finally back within reach! It's been stored at my buddy/co-driver's place (he actually posted here a few years ago...) until this past week. The 1200 km round trip to work on it has made progress slow. But now we're ready to rip.
Ferox, I just learned that the block we have prepped now is a Gen 1!! so yes, I'm going to have to deal with the un-equal length half shafts. So the plan is to take a axle from the 2 gen (since we've swapped to 2 gen front brakes) and mate that with the the longer first gen half shaft. Done deal.
However, HollandJusty can you post your clever fix???
Finish up a bit of body work this week, and bolt up the sub frames over the weekend (if all goes well...)
