My 2nd gear MT 4WD has a hard time engaging, it has for a couple years now. Is this gear or others common on Justys? Any advice short of a replacement? stacks Stacks, Yep! Common problem on high mileage Justys. Problem is worn synchronizer blocking ring on the second gear side of the 1-2 synchronizer assembly. On Justys, second gear is usually the one that gives trouble but, have also seen this on third gear as well. Short of a trans rebuild, you could try replacing the old trans lubricant with fresh lubricant and add a manual trans additive like Lucas to improve shifting. My 88 4WD Justy with 175,000 + mi has the same problem. I change my trans lubricant every 12 months or 12k mi and it seems to help. Good Luck, Jim

didn't someone recently post that the issue was some connector rod bushing between the shifter and the tranny?
or am i totally mistaken?

It was one of the bushings on the pitching stopper, wasn't me that replaced it, but somebody did and said it helped their woes. This pitching stopper connects to the firewall from the motor (to stop the motor from pitching).

My 2nd gear is SUPER notchy but the plus-side is that my has learned to be a very competent double-clutcher and can downshift into 2nd w/out any stress at all.
My car has an indicated 53k miles and was purported to be correct. The transmission doesn't seem to have such low miles and now I have this HORRID "cracking" noise coming from my front differential. I have picked up a spare '91 4x4 5spd last weekend that I plan to temporarily install in my car while I am having the current trans rebuilt. It is shiny like everything else under the hood. I should post some pics, the car looks like a 10k miler in like 1994 or something except for the bumper scuffs.
