My sister threw a rod in her justy and i've been looking around for replacement engines. I found a car that looks good, supposedly has a nice engine, but the tranny is shot.
Here's my dilemma: should I get this car for the engine, pull that and drop it in my sisters car, or take my sisters 5spd and drop it in the car with the engine.
Here are the specs:
Sisters car: 5 door, 5 spd, red, 90, super low miles, perfect interior, almost perfect exterior (dent on one fender), busted engine
Donor car: 3 door, busted EVCT, nicer exterior, almost equal interior
overall both cars are in good shape
I'm looking for whatever will be the quickest and easiest solution. The car will sold after the work is done. or should I just scrap the idea and sell my sisters car as is: broken engine, 60k on car? How much could I get for it? I'd appreciate any ideas.

Oh the age old question... The tranny or the engine?? Well, having been in the same boat that you are in right now I can tell you it will be much easier to put the engine from the 3 door ECVT car into the 5 door 5 speed car. Provided both cars are fuel injected. (I know your sisters 90 5 door is a fuel injected car and 4WD as well... Lucky dog!!) You did not mention the year of the 3 door ECVT. If the 3 door is fuel injected all you will need to do is use the flywheel, flywheel bolts and clutch assembly from the 5 door and bolt it on. I would also unbolt the intake assembly from the 5 door and use it on the 3 door donor engine. (The ECVT throttle body assembly is different than the one used on a 5 speed, Also, the fuel injector main harness connector shape changed in 1992 so it may not work with your 90 body harness if your 3 door donor engine is from a 92-94. It is a real buster to convert an ECVT over to a 5 speed and sadly... Very time consuming! The above engine swap I mentioned can can be done in a weekend and only requires a $10.00 intake to cylinder head gasket. I have performed this swap myself. In my case I had a 90 5 door ECVT 4WD with a busted engine. I picked up a wrecked 93 3 door 5 speed FWD with an excellent engine. So,... The swap was done and 5 door ECVT 4WD now runs like a champ with the donor engine. THE ENGINE SWAP IS THE WAY TO GO!!!! Good luck... Maybe when its finished you won't want to sell it!!! Jim

I want to keep it. It's my sister's car and her decision on the future of it. She's already made up her mind that she hates it, and wants to get as much money for it as she can. I assume that the car is worth more when it operates, so have been looking for a donor engine. If it was up to me....perfect opportunity to turbo charge the beast.
Thanks for the input though. Anybody have a writeup on the engine swap procedure?

SUBIEJIM rocks/ knows his sh!znit! conrawd, Non-tech advice... Whether or not you have a couple buddies helping you, make sure you use an engine hoist. The rental rate will by far balance the hospital expenses and misery of back injury. Respectfully; good luck,

Agreed.. The justy engine may be small but it is not light.. The transmissions aren't bad. Also I agree with the engine swap. Faster, easier. Like Jim said, if you have one fuel injected and one carb'd, then there will be issues, because the manifolds won't work on the other engines. (the heads are different) The other thing is, you basically have to remove the engine to get the transmission out (in a 4wd) anyways, so you'd still be setting up for more work if you did JUST the tranny. Atleast with the motor swaps you can leave the tranny hanging there. -Terry
