Just bought a 90 Justy 2WD 63K from a little old lady. When decelerating at around 20 mph the front wheels momentarily lock up violently. This can be avoided by slightly accelerating and shifting trans to Ds. upshifts fine. Chenged trans fluid, still does it. Where is access to the brushes. Thanks for help

Remove the starter and you will see the brush holder assembly below it.

After looking at the constant trouble with the ECVT on this board, aren't there any competent rebuilders out there? Perhaps in eastern PA? Andy

They're a fairly simple tranny to disassemble if you wanted to tackle the job yourself. I did one myself and didn't have any problems. You'll need the factory service manuals to do it though!

the place where I bought my used Justy 5-speed said he worked at the local Subaru dealership where the head mechanic could rebuild the ECVT. That was in Eastern Ohio, near Gnedenhutten and New Philadelphia. On the other hand, A guy sold me an 89 for $47. because no transmission shop had ever had any luck rebuilding them. I took it apart just to salvage parts and out of curiosity. one of the main bearings in side was busted. I'm glad I didn't have to put it back together. I got my factory manual on ebay for $70. It's worth it. I could check the ECVT section and see if it's copy-able. Let me know if you're interested. Tom

Unfortunetly, "The factory service manual" for the Justy grew from 1 book in 1989 into a 4 book set for 1990. I just recently purchased a complete 4 book set on ebay (A complete set is HARD to find!!) but, I do have an extra book 1 (General Information) and book 2 (Engine and Transmission) for a 1990 Justy that I would be willing to sell. The books are "Well Used" but, in decent shape.
If you are interested PM me and we can work out the details.
Jim

Hey Jim I can't afford to buy your manual but could you tell me what is wrong when the trans acts like you are putting on the brakes when you slow down or make a turn. I thank you for your time.

Okay guys i need some HELP! I recently got from my aunt a 91 justy 4/wh drv ECVT with 35,000 miles. The clutch was replaced with facotory new unit at 32,000 miles and the tranny "rebuilt/serviced" at a Dealer in MPLS area along with new brushes. It just quit and the tranny will do nothing. What is the correct voltage to the brushes to make the clutch engage? I have no voltage to them ( the brushes) and all the fuses/relays i've found seem good.... Where do i start this search? any ideas greatly appreciated Jay

I'll have to check the symptoms chart in the manual and get back to you. Unfortunately, I too have my own ECVT woes at the moment.... ! My 90 4wd 5 door has a code 35 (line pressure solenoid) and my 4wd does not engage (May also be related to the above code) The car does move (I guess I'm lucky it does that!) but, the trans feels a bit slippy! All this after I rebuilt an engine from a parts car to replace the blown up unit that was in it (I bought the car broke and never heard it run) Oh Yeah, did I mention this car sat for 3 years before I rescued it last Dec. (Guess I just did!) At this point I have $1,000.oo in a car that runs great but, has a trans that needs some work.... My #1 frustration with this project is...The factory manuals overall are good but, real WEAK on the electrical diagnostics for the ECVT. (Anyone else share this opinion or is it just me???) I know EVERYBODY thinks the ECVT is a "Pile of S@#T" (They are probably right!) but, even with the trans in my 90 not quite right it STILL has better pick up than my 88 carbed manual 4wd. If I can just get this thing "RIGHT" it will be a hell of a car!!! OK..I'm done venting my spleen...Thanks for listening Jim Hey Jim I can't afford to buy your manual but could you tell me what is wrong when the trans acts like you are putting on the brakes when you slow down or make a turn. I thank you for your time.

ANYONE KNOW WHY THE ECVT WOULD FEEL LIKE IT IS HOLDING BACK AFTER IT RUNS FOR A LITTLE WHILE, ALSO WHEN YOU MAKE A TURN IT HOLDS BACK LIKE PUTTING ON THE BRAKES.
