I finally finished getting my 89' GL together after an engine swap and a bunch of rehab, put around a 1000miles on her, and started to hear a sound from the motor. Its not audible from the cabin, only when your standing over the motor and revving. I suspect that one of the rod bearings is just starting to go out, but before I begin to rip her apart (again) I wanted to see what someone who had delt with this thinks. A little background - recently swapped the oil pump, timing belt/tensioner, adjusted all the valve clearances, and replaced the head gasket with a new, MLS one. I checked my oil pressure, and it running in a normal range. I would describe the noise as more of a fast, rapping sound as opposed to a knock at this point, so I would suspect its still very early stages. There is NO sign of the sound at any RPM until the motor is FULLY warm, then above around 2200RPM, the sound starts. The noise increases with engine RPM. Now, I know that the oil pump chain tensioner can wear out, and create free play in the chain, is there any chance that this is the problem, not a rod knock? I don't know how that would sound, or if it would even make a sound. Any input would be very welcomed!! Here is a link where i'm running the engine, the sound can be tough to hear in the video, but its only at higher RPM like I said. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-oH3kyzBnk

www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeVJ5qD03B8... Rod knock. Get it now, you might save the crank. Drop the pan, check the bearings, from the bottom. This can be done in about 1-2 hours depending on skill and equipment. You may be able to get by with new bearings, but beg, borrow, buy a micrometer to make sure the crank is round. Don't just plastigauge it. I tried that too many times to only have to pull and grind the crank. However your sound is not too horrific yet, so you might get lucky.

Awesome, thanks for the input man! I can bring home a micrometer from work, so i'll do my due diligence there. Fingers crossed!
