Hi, I bought my Justy last year and have had 1 year's trouble free motoring with it. However coming up for MOT time there were a few signs it wasn't going to make it through! Justy Last year Just before the MOT I put on a new exhaust and had heard a knocking sound at the back of the car which I discovered was the shock absorber just before going for MOT, so I knew I had at least that to replace.... Shock absorber coming into car Plastic cap off The Front Anti roll bar also tore itself from the bracket, the design of the front anti-roll bar is about the worst I've seen, really bad mounting points.. Another view of rear shock Other rear shock Both rear shocks and you can see the rubber top mount failed. So I decided to refresh the suspension and order some new parts from Japan to make it a bit nicer to drive I also ordered some new wings from Japan

Replacing the suspension is a manageable task, but once removed I found the following holes. Sadly none of these holes were discovered on the MOT. I would like to know if anyone else has suffered holes in the same locations and how they have fixed them... I have a MIG and TIG/ ARC welder, but havn't used the TIG function. I have a feeling that I should TIG weld this for the strongest finish. Also what gauge / thickness of material have you used for repairs? Does anyone have a justy that is breaking that I could get good sections of the damaged panels from? I suspect that most are in a similar condition to mine.... Cheers, Ewan

Chooch,
Those rear strut tops are pretty common failure, particularly when old.
Your rust spots are common too, but if that is your lower rad support... you have major troubles. The easy way would be to replace with big 2" tube, but if you're in the UK and need to make MOT you have a lot of work ahead. Without making it original I think you would need to get that passed by an engineer.

I should add... that's the worst I've seen for that front support. I'm surprised the motor hasn't fallen out!

Thanks Matt,
I have found various other anomolies in that front area, I think the car has had some light accident damage in the past, which has led to the corrosion. It is all fixable though, I've never heard of anyone having engineer inspections here. That's basically like an extended MOT when you build a Kit car or import a car not destined for the UK market. I have checked with Subaru and can't get any replacement OEM panels...

Hi,
I'm not sure where you are located drewstafur, but I have a contact at Subaru UK's importers that I use for my forester! So basically I looked up the manual and identified all the parts I needed, then he check the Subaru parts catalogue for the equivalent parts (what's still available) and checked UK and Japan stock for what was available. I managed to get some discounts on UK stock, but had to pay full price for imported parts. Sadly not everything is available, I'm not sure why Subaru made such a complicated design. The front anti-roll bar design is really bad, same with the rear suspension keeping the springs separate from the shock absorbers, likewise the stupid rubber donuts on the top mounts...

P.S. so annoying photobucket's taken down my pictures now, thought they had forgotten about me...
