The Good: So I got lucky and found a Subaru Justy in the PNW where they don't last two hours on craigslist. It's an ECVT automatic with 4wd. It has 129,000 miles and only one owner. It came with every receipt since 1991. Definitely a score and I couldn't be more excited. I had a '94 Subaru Legacy in Alaska that will always have a special place in my heart and I feel like this model is a total gem. The Bad: First off, I know very little about cars. I may or may not be smart deep down inside. What's wrong with it is the pulley that the timing belt goes to from the alternator. It is bad. I found a junkyard 45 miles away that says it has 20 Justys lyin' around so tomorrow I'm off to score a "new" pulley, bolt, washer and seal. So my question is, basically what am I doing? Should I bother getting a seal from the junkyard or buy one online? Should I replace the washer I have? It still looks like a washer, but just one that's been on a car since 1991. ANYWAY. Thanks for being here, I appreciate the resources.

When I try to put up pictures it says something about a space limit? I'm new here, so, sorry in advance.

I'd buy a new seal for sure, don't forget to grab the woodruff key when you get the pulley, they aren't standard size and they are easy to lose. Also that is not a timing belt, it's a serpentine belt. Why is that part bad? I've pulled mine off several times and I don't see how it could be damaged.

As far as pictures go, I had to upload my photos to a hosting site like photobucket.com. Then you simply copy the the direct link from photobucket and insert it into the forum "insert image" tool on the top bar( to the right of font sizing options. Hope this helps. I just got my justy not too long ago and I love the car. All I can say is watch your oil pressure and keep the oil fresh.

I found the woodruff key slot... Looks like I'm going to have to replace my whole crankshaft? I don't know I think this is an old problem based on how it was all just epoxy'd together. Prolly still worth the 650? Anyway, should I epoxy the woodruff key into place?

How does the pulley look?

I got a replacement pulley(or harmonic balancer) when I picked up the woodruff key etc. It's the one pictured--on cardboard Is the seal the right size? Gah, I don't know anything

I'm kinda tired, so sorry for not having been more clear- The parts on cardboard, other than the washer that isn't beveled, are what I picked up today. The epoxied crankshaft is the way it was when I bought it, it didn't have a woodruff key. I then dug the filler out for the picture of the gouged crankshaft.

The seal looks correct. If it were me I'd probably put the new seal in and get some 2 stage epoxy and reassemble. The only thing that pulley does is run the alternator. The seal sits behind the crank timing gear not behind the pulley.

Thanks a lot, the pulley is functional now but I'm having a different problem... While idling the rpms dip and then go back up to 1000 intermittently. It's also dipped all the way to stall, while idling. The battery is 3 days old, could it be the alternator still or some kind of fuel injection problem?

When the voltage is low it does raise the rpm to keep up with the headlights, heater and such. It could be the problem. The computer controls the idle.

No check engine light. It's fuel injected. I will troubleshoot further and report back, thanks for everything.

Arright, so I replaced the fuel filter for good measure, I figured since it was encased in dirt that'd be a good idea. Since doing that it runs better but still has a rough idle. I then noticed that the idle dips to stall more easily when I have the headlights on. So then I disconnected that battery and started checking the grounds. The ground that goes from the positive battery cable and the starter looked like it could have better contact, so I disconnected it. Then I pulled the cable connector apart and there's white goo on the contacts inside the plastic? It's pretty moist in the PNW, I'm guessing that's the cause...

The white stuff is dielectric grease. It is meant to lubricate and protect the connection.
If your idle is dropping when electrical loads are applied there is likely a problem with the idle up system.

If anyone needs it the woodruff key size is 4mm*5mm*12.65mm in the metric woodruff key section.

So I didn't tighten the crankshaft bolt enough and long story short I'm going to pick up a new pulley. In other news I took off the timing belt cover and it is all cracked and wonky. I don't know what kind of problems that could cause but I'm going to replace that too.
The one weird thing I wanted to ask about was the timing... I'm replacing the timing belt because it's cracked but noticed that the two sprockets aren't synced up. The camshaft timing mark is lined up when the crankshaft key groove is at about 10 o'clock. What kind of problems would this cause? Thanks!

You mentioned you replaced the fuel filter, may I ask how do you find it? I couldn't find it on my FI '91 Justy. Thank you in advance.
