So I bought a 1988 manual 4wd justy, odo said 65k mi, it was only $400 so I figured wth. It drove justy fine, I had a stupid grin on my face bouncing all the way home. I have a thing for unique cars that tend to have no aftermarket. Couple decent oil leaks, compression good, interior mint, and not much more ado. Arizona car, so no rust, which is nice. Basic tune up will happen in a couple days. Hopefully I'll be able to track down some of these leaks. I'm looking to turn this into a little desert trail bomber soon enough. Pic updates to follow. Any other maintenance ideas besides the fluids and plugs are very welcome, the oil on the cap was not welcoming, but the cooling system seems tiptop.

Welcome!
Do you happen to already own a Subaru?

Thanks for looking! This is my first Subaru actually. I've owned many (still do) monteros, starions, and my DD is a 07 civic. I am a big fan of quality, the build quality is pretty astounding on subaru, that's for sure.
Update on the justy. Changed the oil (super old and black, barely any metal, no chocolate milk), hooked up all the vacuum lines correctly, seafoamed the gas tank, and drove about 200 miles so far. Avgd 27.4 mpg, not bad but going to flush tranny today, and change the oil(15w-40) again tomorrow morning. So far everything is holding up well!! The more I drive it the better it is. Passed emissions first try, the guys there couldn't believe it was 400 with new battery and tires. They didn't even do the "full" test, just asked me to peel out when I left. I obliged lmao...justys are so whimsical, I'm digging it.

Also added stp engine oil leak stop (I'd recommend AT-205 but it's pretty much special order). NO MORE LEAKS...I think that "fix in a bottle" is usually snake oil, but it's better to try than regasketing an engine. I'm very glad I tried it. Updates to follow!

Work today on the car was a transmission fluid change. Shifts into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear had a loud grind associated unless I could find the perfect rpm. The oil in it looked like the viscosity of motor oil..not good. I used stay-lube 85w-90 limited slip gear oil from napa for for about $50. Worked wonders, smooth shifting and no more grinding. Miraculously, it rained in AZ, so I also popped the off-roading cherry. I mustve went a little too hard doing sh!tties...popped a tire, and now the front end is super squirrely. When I release the gas going highway speeds the car jeers to the right. On the plus side it became much easier to steer. Its 3 am and I just got home after the flat tire fiasco, thank RNGsus it had a good full spare. I'll tighten things down again tomorrow...hopefully I justy need to retighten stuff.

Bought a new tire from discount for 78 total, used the old tire (155 80 r12) as spare (still good, poppped seal).Tightened down the sway bar bolts and the crossbar and the effect of torque steer is minimal. Bad news is the fresh oil change has loosened a deposit, clogged the oil pump and started loud knocking. Pulling off the oil pan tonight to check and/or replace the rod bearings, along with a new oil pump. Of course I was looking at oil pressure gauges last night...premonition? What else should I replace when I'm down there, and what is a good gasket kit??!

Shortly after my last post which seems like forever ago, the Justy had died on thd freeway after putting well over 400 miles on in short time. We were in the process of moving and along with my other 9 cars, the justy ended up sitting. I kept lurking and reading here on this wonderful forum. I went through all the vacuum lines and blah blah, fresh battery and started it up again finally, and it ran.
It's absolutely knocking.
I could not abandon the car, and my now wife (plus 8 month daughter) agrees. Within the upcoming week I'll be rebuilding this guy. Compression tests came back great, Cyl 1 @ 144, Cyl 2 @ 150, Cyl 3 @ 153 dry. This will save me considerable machine shop cost. Hope the crank is still serviceable (ha dont we all). Started ordering parts such as complete oil pump. I'll keep updated with pics. Thank you to this awesome knowledgable community.

I have changed a trans before, done head gasket, and played with most else. I dont know how people could pull this engine in less than 2 hours, personally with carb and AC had I done it straight through it would have taken me 5 hours minimum. It's out, I have A/C air conditioning, so that made it a hair more difdicult because it did work. I didn't want to break the system open in my garage and add to the expense of the rebuild (R12 in the house). The hub ends of the axles looked excellent, even the cv boots for a 30 year old car. I only broke ONE vacuum nipple, and of course jt's for the 4WD haha. I'd like to make a how to on pulling it for the dummies like me.

Can you please tell me where are you getting the parts from for your Justy? I have a 1993 1.0L Justy and I need some electrical parts for it. Would appreciate if you could point me to a website or something that sells Justy spares.

hey sorry for the late reply. A crap ton of internet searching is the only way ive found parts. clegg engine out of utah has pistons and gasket kits. most of the stuff i've been able to get from ebay. As far as electrical, I'd suggest fixing the pieces that are malfunctioning, solder and cleaning
