I have no experience with cherry bombs or Mufflers but my little Justy is coming along and I wanted to give it a little bit of a growl.
What do you guys suggest? I would not want to drop a whole lot of money.
I found the cherry bombs on Ebay. What one do I need and is this a good a cheap way to give it some growl?
Do I need the strait pipe from 2" to 2"?

I used to run a cherry bomb instead of the stock muffler on mine. A cherry bomb glasspack will give it a lot more than a growl, it'll be pretty loud. Loud enough that it gets annoying on the freeway.
Currently I'm running 2" from a gutted front cat, to a short cherry bomb glasspack, then angled out and side exiting by the rear passenger side door. I had to make my own silencer to make it tolerable for the street.
Also, I have no carpet, no sound deadening and no rear seat. It'd be quieter with a full interior.
My suggestion to you would be to look at magnaflows or something similar. You're probably going to want more than just a glasspack, something with some baffles in it so it's not just loud.

I was under the impression from others (previously) on here that the gutted pre-cat creates a volume of reduced flow rate, which kind of acts like an exhaust leak off the manifold. It makes sense considering Q = VA. If Q stays the same and A gets bigger, then V has to get smaller so the exhaust gas slows down and loses back-pressure. But what makes sense on paper in a simplified model rarely matches reality, so I'm interested in your direct experience. Of course, if you modified your whole exhaust system at the same time, then it's impossible to differentiate the effects of the various changes, but I'm also interested in general impressions and contrasts in actual net performance. Full disclosure, I gutted my pre-cat years ago before I thought about it too much, so I have been thinking that I f'ed it up, but you're giving me some hope of redemption. Also, I haven't been able to do any real work on my Justy for the past 5 years since I moved into my current house, so that's why I haven't figured this out myself already...house is getting sold in a few months.

Honestly, I don't really know. Like you I gutted it years ago, but I don't really remember it making much of a difference. I also never had a complete stock exhaust on the car to compare it to (it was rusted into pieces when I got it).
Personally I think exhaust mods are too hard to gauge without a dyno. It's too easy to change your perception of performance just by making the car louder.

Back when I had my '91, I took the muffler off for fun. Holy low-tone. People in real rice-rockets would rev up at intersections only to have me take off faster then they could; after a while of this forum I decided to gut said front cat. Oh sure, no problems at all except the nice sound went away and sounded like shit and then, suddenly, randomly, very shortly after that, my O2 sensor went out. *shrugs

But you are right I dont just want a LOUD car. The stock muffler is on it and in good condition I wish I knew more, I would run some test for you guys lol I also Do live in CA so cant have it to LOUD. Is there better prices on Magnaflows then Amazon?

Don't search for anything justy specific when it comes to performance options, you won't find anything. Unfortunately any mods to a justy will have to be custom, it's far too uncommon for of the shelf performance parts. So something like swapping out the muffler for something louder will require you (or a muffler shop) to custom fabricate and weld in a universal muffler. Something like this one www.amazon.com/Magnaflow-11113-Stainless-Steel-Muffler/dp/B000XQO0WK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445956099&sr=8-1&keywords=MAGNAFLOW+11113(There are cheaper "performance" brands like thrush that are also an option.) I'm not trying to rain on your parade here, I just want you to know what you're getting into. -Dave

I was looking for same effect. If you drill QTY 3 1/2" holes evenly across the top of the muffler, opposite to the heat shield on the body, you'll get much more growl. I also bought the 1/2" sheet metal hole plugs to trial and error different holes. There is a difference where the holes are located. There was definatley big changes in sound and power as I plugged/unplugged holes and tried tried different combinations. Biggest difference would be the car would be sluggish until 40 mph, then all of a sudden sound was super smooth and acceleration good.
I found depending on what holes were plugged either the starting acceleration or acceleration after 40 mph would be less restrictive than stock, but it's a super cheap way to get the growl, if you don't like it just plug them back up.
About 3 1/2" holes starts to get too loud, so perhaps 3 smaller holes would work better.

I'm going to be playing with some mufflers soon too, I'm going to put on a porter muffler just for kicks and giggles to hear what it sounds like, My plan was to scavenge as many after market mufflers with about 2" diameter inlets and outlets and flange them so I could swap them out for testing purposes. I'll post if i come up with any good setups.

Stock muffler, drill 4 1/2" holes evenly spaced across the center top (opposite to heat shield). Buy some hole plugs (chrome dome with 8 fingers on opposite side). Play whack-a-mole with the holes until you get the sound. I believe I have the far driver's side plugged, and the third one to the right plugged. It has a solid respectable glass pack sound. I don't like the rice burners with such loud uncontrolled sound, it sounds like the engine is messed up. Plus they stomp on it and don't go any faster than the Justy.
$5 and you have solid glasspack sound

Im running my 88 with no muffler, front cat gutted, rear cat is still in place. It sounds mean, I eventually found out that my vac. advance diaphragms were bad so I nichts the vac advance. Now when on decel in gear, at certain RPMS, I get an awesome exhaust burble some times a couple pops too I love it!

My vac advance works fine and I get the pop and burble too lol Really? Mine didnt really do it until the vac advance was bypassed, but it was having some weird effects on the engine overall. I love that sound it makes it seem sportier!
