I told them about the poor job the other shop had done, that other block would still need to be bored out and this is the first time building an engine... Wanted to paint it platinum silver (to match the original body color) but couldn't find it in an engine paint and so i could see any oil leaks.

I love that aluminum look, i went with a similar finish on mine too. Looks great so far!
Im going to have to ask and be sure that you sealed that chain guide to the block.
As far as a carb, I never got to experience mine with the stock carb installed but I know the weber rocks this little thing out. Classic weber sound too you can hear it working.
Question for everybody at what interval after the rebuild should the head be retorqued? I did mine at 100 miles and then again at 700 mi because I had some seepage from the head gasket.

Did remember to seal the chain guide to the block, and got a set of o-rings to replace all the old ones

I had my engine all together and had someone on the forum ask me about that guide. It stressed me out for a minute until I remembered doing it. I actually had a discussion with my buddy about it while I was doing it.
Did your seal kit include the little rubber pieces that slide into the sides of the rear main bearing cap? I had to make some out of a big o ring and slowly work everything down to be sure it was all the way in place.

my itm gasket kit didn't come with main bearing cap seals or o-rings, had to order those from subaru... the valve cover grommets don't fit and it came with all exhaust valve seals instead of some of each

I think we got the same kit, mine had the same issues. Thats funny to hear about the valve seals. When I gave them to my machine shop they gave me a speech about owner supplied parts and recommended I keep them. I dont know why I refused to go to subaru for the parts. I guess I thought they would be too much and I was still trying to pinch pennies, Silly Me.

Yikes, that's gross. I had a similar experience.
How do you plan to reattach it?

remove the rivets and tap and die for a small bolt. has anyone used RTV for the oil pan instead of the cork gasket? can someone tell what this part is and what it does, been looking for a new one for months and cant find it in the service manual or subaru dealer part catalogs, it mounts on the coolant pipe between the engine and radiator Thermo sensor, RPE NUMBER:TB-184A / HITACHI:TB-184A ... www.rpe-autoparts.com.tw/pro_02.asp?seq=299
