I can't find solid info on this - I know it's a problem, but I keep finding conflicting information. Does the timing chain cover (the big one) crack? If so, where exactly? Anyone have pictures of a cracked one? I can't find any pictures showing where the crack forms, just statements that it does, and at $489 I would rather carefully inspect the one I have and reuse it on my rebuild than just buy a new one. I know the oil pump cover cracks and the O-ring fails - are there any aftermarket upgraded covers that don't fail, or are we stuck with the factory replacements and careful monitoring? I have already planned on putting an oil pressure gauge in... I don't like not having one at all especially with known design issues in the oiling system. My current motor runs fine and sounds great aside from some chain rattle, but I have a mostly complete motor in great shape that I already bought, so I am going to clean everything up, repaint it, regasket/reseal/rebearing everything, put new water pump and oil pump plus timing belt and chain/tensioner in, and put it in the car just for peace of mind. I've searched, and read every thread I could find on the subject, but found no pictures of exactly where the crack forms. This photobucket album was about the closest I found: s618.photobucket.com/user/DSinOhio/library/Justy%20Engine%20Cover but I don't see any indication of a crack on the large cover aside from the broken-off timing cover mounting boss.

I worked around it by adding an external filter and engine oil cooler to add capacity. I also shortened the oil change interval to 3000 miles (once a year for me) and use an oil pressure and temp gauge. Subaru made two mistakes with the Justy engine. They didnt put a bushing/bearing on the oil pump shaft, and made the oil specs way too broad. 7000 miles on 3qts of oil on a tiny engine is asking a lot.

Awesome, thank you very much for that info. Now I don't feel bad about not being able to find a crack on the cover I got with my donor engine after staring at it for some time. Thank you very much for the link to the oil pump bushing thread - I hadn't found that one. I've been considering machining a custom steel cover for my oil pump to replace the cast aluminum one, as well... think that would be a good idea or will it cause faster wear on the end of the impellers? Seems like it'd be fine to me, as vane style power steering pumps are set up like that and have no real issues with the end plates usually. All the pictures are broken in the link to this forum... the ones in the ultimatesubaru link work however. I think I have enough to work from now! EDIT: The UltimateSubaru thread links back to this forum, but the link was broken due to a forum domain move at some point. Fortunately a little tweaking fixed that and here we go! Cool I'm glad it helps.
Also dont use synthetic oil as it seems Justy do not like them, and do reduce the oil change intervals. These engine parts are just too hard to get so an extra oil change a year is cheap insurance.

I completely agree on the oil change intervals, I would rather spend twice as much on oil changes if it means not redoing an engine again. I am currently collecting parts for a minor block rebuild on my spare, going to do the bushing install on the timing cover, new bearings as needed, all new gaskets, clean all parts, then drop it in and rebuild my original engine as needed as well. Already have the oil pump cover, balance shaft bearings, oil pump inner and outer rotors, a bunch of seals, and one of the last remaining OEM balance chain guides waiting for the build.
I need to get ahold of one of my friends who has access to a CMM and take full dimensions of all parts before installing them. I'd rather have fabrication drawings so we can at least attempt to duplicate the parts if required... because some of the ones I am now in possession of are the last ones that were on the dealer parts inventory list and they aren't making more.
