I just bought my 88 gl and when its cold it idles really really rough and dies out till it gets warm. I had a buddy tell me it could be the choke coil but is there anything else it could be.

When the engine is cold (if carbed) remove the air cleaner cover, press gas pedal to floor once, and see if the choke closes. Once the engine is warm, make sure the plate is open.
If it isnt opening yes the choke heater can be at fault.

I have found that my choke is fine but if it is still has a rough idle you need to check and make sure your carb is down tight and the gasket isn't bad if that's not it its the vacuum solenoids, the gasket for your carb mount is only 73 cents at rockauto.com but if you change it make sure you get some carb cleaner while its off and clean it really good.
