What has worked the best for me in Alaska is having a pad heater on the oil pan, and an auxillary coolant heater (like the one he posted above), and a battery trickle charger. This way your oil will be warm as soon as you start, coolant will keep the block warm (and heater will blow warm almost right away), and have full cranking power.

Kevin, Maybe this will help. Here's one in the block I'm working on. It's in the three prong plug just above the oil filter. Would be kinda hard to get to without removing intake manifold, but not impossible. NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So frustrating! I drained the radiator on my only day off, got my extension, bought the 14mm hex socket and blindly unscrewed it, and... it's a completely different size. <href>http://www.fivestarmanufacturing.com/getdoc/2c8a6911-c214-4190-9059-d6aaa10fe527/DC12.aspx</href> says that I should use the 11405 KAT (which is common to all Subaru engines), with the threads at 36mm. The plug I removed is 36mm yet the 11405 plug is more like 27mm, even though it says 36mm on their site. What the hell? Anyone have any idea how this can be, other than an inventory gaffe? It clearly states 11405 on the plug, but is significantly smaller. The installation guide says Rear Left, which this location is. Anyone know if there is a 27mm frost plug in the block somewhere???

okay, after triple-checking it, some dummy in the factory slapped the wrong part number on the plug and it's just wrong in every sense. No problem.
For the guy using the trickle charger, do you use the Battery Tender Junior?
That seems like the best one out there.

Yep... I've had lot's of "mis-boxed" stuff, always seems it's from rock-auto warehouses, and then I have to ship it back, and wait for the replacement..
