The car: 1991 4WD EFI ECVT 51,000 miles.
Hey all, I have been going through this Justy I purchased recently. It had 50,000 original miles, and sat for long periods of time (I am only assuming due to the mileage and the sun fade on the dash and vinyl parts of the top of the seats). So far I have changed the ECVT brushes with great success. I have also gone through all the fluids, changed spark plugs, distributor and rotor. I bought wires, but the ones that they sold me at my local Carquest were definitely not for the Justy. I would have been okay with them, but the coil wire was just long enough to connect with tension on the wire. I returned the wires and thought I would get around to ordering a set in the near future. This is all I have done, aside from messing with the TPS on the side of the EFI intake, and the timing.
The car is idling rough. I would expect this from a 3 cylinder engine, but it is rough enough to choke it out and kill the engine periodically. I cannot leave it running to warm up in the morning, for instance. I have tried leaving the car outside at night (we don't get that cold here in Portland, Oregon), and keeping it in the garage so it is warmer. Same result. It seems to get past a warm-up choke setting, and then rough idle till it dies out at some point. I could live with this, but the worst part is while driving, with foot on the gas at cruising speed, the car will jerk and shudder occasionally, like either electrical or fuel is out. If I mash on the gas, it revs up, no problem. This only seems to be a problem at idle and cruising speed.
A couple of weeks ago, I seafoamed the top end using the brake vacuum line. Not sure if the problem got worse or better. I just put a second bottle in today to see if I can knock anything more loose. All that white smoke makes me feel like something is happening anyway...
Yesterday I changed out the fuel filter and the fuel line to it, thinking that may be the issue. I have not had a chance to get out and really test it, but while just running the engine a little to get the fuel through the line and just look around the engine for further vacuum leaks that I may have missed, the engine died a couple of times.
While timing the engine, the light is pretty jumpy, it doesn't seem to always hit on the mark. I have it at just over 5 degrees from what I can tell. I tried putting the sensor on the coil wire, and noticed that there are marks all around the pulley, I assume at 0 or 5 degrees, but only #1 has the full set from 0 to 20 degrees or so.
Sorry if I am rambling. I am trying to note everything that I have done. Anyone have any further ideas? I have not pulled injectors and inspected them.
