'88 and I've done the following: Weber carb installed a few months ago (switched to 50/50 jets recently) New starter New fuel pump checked for spark (relatively young sparkplugs) new battery new alt belt and had alt tested (passed) I was trying to get to work this morning and the justy wouldn't start. I tried combinations of depressing the acceleration pedal (which usually I have to press it about halfway down to cold start) but nothing worked. The rate that it turned over increased once I pressed the pedal all the way in, but still didn't start up. Here is a video: youtu.be/pIho5C_c2XAI'm trying to tackle this quickly because cycling to work in November isn't ideal.

Double check you have spark. Put a spark plug on the end of a lead and ground it, then crank over the engine and make sure it has spark.

Hey Terry, ran the test and got a spark on all the plugs. For some reason I think I might not be getting enough fuel, but the choke is engaging.

Okay. Try putting a little gas down the carb and see if it flashes up. If it does I would check fuel supply to the carb, and if that's OK I would suspect restricted or incorrect jetting. Or a massive vacuum leak.
If it doesn't flash up then look in to camshaft timing.

Try keep turning the engine for some 10 seconds or more if you have another car and jump cables. Have You try it with engine starting spray?

Tried starter fluid / gas, but no change. Took him to the mechanic, we did a compression test and cylinders 1 and 3 had zero compression. He says it's the end of the road for this justy...

that didnt sound like 0 compression.
if it were the starter would just spin the motor freely. no chug chug chug just wuuuuRRRRRRRRRR as it goes.
plugs in tight? also check your distributor. make sure it didnt somehow get rotate all the way to one side. had that happen once. spark was so late it wasnt igniting fuel.

also, have someone crank the car while you look at the fluid in the radiator. any bubbles? might need to crank for a while. vibrations like the water cup in jurassic park the movie are fine. big bubbles like boiling water are not. also wet your finger, take off the oil cap and check there for air rushing out when cranking. if theres no compression in the cylinders that air has to go somewhere on the compression stroke.

Mechanic elaborated and said I was getting about 30 psi on cylinders one and three, and a leak test had both exhaust valves showing "major" signs of leaking...

can anyone confirm if this is an interference motor or not?
double check your valve lash clearances. could be way off basically holding a valve open or closed. this test would take about 20 minutes to do. worth it to not throw a car away.

No, take the timing belt right off and crank it over, the valves will not hit the pistons.

then unless the HG is blown in two places, the compression issue almost has to be valve related. this assumes the mechanic was being honest.

Valve lash clearance was fine, so I guess I've gotta trust the mechanic on this one? I'll try to pass this justy along...

makes me sad when it comes to no choice but to let her go.

to be frankly honest, the car should still start even with poor compression on most of the holes. it will just run like piss.
maybe double check some simple connections and take off the dizzy cap?
if you do decide to let her go, theres lots of people on the boards that could use parts that are probably local to you ( think you mentioned washington state).
think of it like an organ donor.

You're right, it has been starting up lately and just running very poorly. Found a man in Olympia who took the whole thing. I do have a hitachi carb (the one I replaced the weber for) that I want to get rid of.
