Hi all, new to this forum, Subarus, and Justys in general. I know of an '89 Justy 4wd 5spd here in Alaska that I could get for under 200. I have many questions however and am hoping this board has some considerate people who could answer my questions. First of all its engine is in pieces. Apparently the balance shaft disintegrated into several pieces. Personally I have no interest in a 3pot engine that needs counterbalancing, nor do I have any interest in carburetors. So my question: can a geo metro 1l engine be adapted to the Justy's drivetrain? I know the bellhousing pattern is different, flywheel is too small, clutch spline is different and motor mounts don't line up, but has anyone gotten around that? The bellhousing can have an adapter plate made for it I assume; it's the flywheel and clutch splines I'm worried about. Also, since the Justy's body is very rusty, does anyone think it possible to put its drivetrain under said metro's body? Specifically a '91 metro 5 door? I'm not asking to be told it's not worth it and I'm being stupid. I would just like to know if anyone's gone either route with a metro. Also for those of you who will tell me the metro engine will be woefully underpowered, I am aware of the fact but am quite familiar with those engines and know they have significant (lol "significant") torque capability. Oh, I also want to know what type of 4wd/awd this car sports. Is it viscous awd, full time 4wd, or that 90/10 distributed power thing, 50/50 part time 4x4...etc. Thank you.

With further thought, the clutch/flywheel wouldn't be that big of a problem. Justy pressure plate and clutch, and either a justy flywheel machined with the Metro's bolt mounting points and bolts, or use a 1.3l metro's larger flywheel and just turn in down in diameter. So, I suppose mating to the bellhousing would be the most difficult part. Then custom motor mounts.

You probably already saw this on the forum, but if not, here's a link (http://subarujusty.proboards.com/thread/5734/hi-all-got-conversion). To be honest, I don't think it will help much because it's a very different project, but just in case... If nothing else, you could try to contact the member to see if he has any other pointers.

I did see that actually. I might send him a PM, see if he made any headway. Thanks for the response, it was at least the start I was looking for.

You're welcome. If you have any questions later on, fell free to ask me. I'm a beginner at this and probably can't help with much under the hood, but I've had a lot of weird little problems with the Justy I just bought so I've taken a lot of things apart and put a lot of things back together, so I've become pretty familiar with the car as a whole.

You'd be better off to put in an EFI Justy engine and remove the balance shaft. Then if you really need to, transfer it all over to the Geo.

I've read that the guys that've removed the balance shaft had engines that shook so badly they sometimes broke engine mounts. Is this not the case? Also, in which way do you mean I'd be better off? Just ease vs reward? Btw thanks for responding, I'm glad I'm atleast getting responses.

The balance shaft in the Justy doesn't do a lot. Traditional balance shafts spin at 3x engine speed, and by doing that they can actually smooth out the engine. The Justy's is 1-1 with the crank and smooths out idle.. However the Justy also uses a 25lb flywheel for smooth idle. Also, the idle is never smooth. The balance shaft in the Justy doesn't exactly rob HP because of this.
You'd be better off doing what I said because it's easier, cheaper, and you could get the car running within a week. Also the Justy engine is a really good engine for the mechanically inclined that can prevent problems. The Geo G10's are good motors too, but I don't see the benefit in all that time/money.
As far as power I doubt you would notice a difference. However I "raced" a kid in a Sprint one day, and he never got close to me. (Most pathetic looking race ever..)
Transferring the drivetrain/suspension to the Geo sounds like a lot of work and you would probably want to get another Justy to pilfer before cutting your driver up to completely a swap that might not even be possible.
