Hello I know this is a common problem and I did search but didnt find anything to answer my question specifically. I appologise if this is one of those questions that has been asked a million times but im going to have to ask it again. Just got my justy today and Im trying to get an idea of what to do and the order of things. I noticed on start up (cold) the oil pressure is about 20-25 lbs which seems ok I wouldnt mind it being higher but can live with it. Though when it is fully warm like after a road trip the pressure is about 10 lbs at a high idle rpm of 900- 1100 rpm I just bumped up the idle to where the light stayed off at all times I know that is high. My question to you good sirs is where would you start in the diagnoses of the low oil pressure. Currently my thoughts are to go for the oil pump which I have read can cause issue with age. My justy is an 88 2dr 4wd 5spd with 98400 on the clock could be 198400. I may be pulling the engine for some various oil leaks and what I think is a bad clutch soon anyway so I could address the issue then. I know that would be the time to inspect it all but to be honest if the pan isn't leaking I don't want to pull it if I don't have to. So what can a lazy man do to remedy the situation a little more permanently than thicker oil and a high idle . Thanks

Change the oil pump, it's easy and relatively cheap then go from there.
If your pressure doesn't increase then you're probably looking at at least a minor engine rebuild.

I like that answer! That was kind of my plan so if nothing else I could cross it off the list of things. Thanks for the advice

Hi, Max just so you know, (but not to burst any bubbles) I have already a couple of years ago changed the oil pump (inner + outer rotors and 3-bolt cover) trying for the same easy fix but unfortunately I think the problem is in the only part that I didn't change which is the front engine cover that the pump turns in. I never felt like doing it because of it being an engine out job and me not having a hoist at the time, but this would be a great time to re-clutch and re-seal also. I do understand that the oil pump bore in the cover can be machined out und sleeved which might be a good option considering that part's dubious availability. The pan has been off before because I changed the rod bearings and head gasket and re-ringed it when I did the oil pump all at the same time. (I think that whole action got me maybe 2 or 3 more PSI)

Sorry for the late response, I've been busy with the process of home buying. Any way it's good to know that stuff has been replaced at least I know what to cross out on that list of what to do. I think for now, if i can get the clutch working ok, I will ride with the low oil psi just making sure to keep thicker oil in it and the rpms up as need be.
