It's recommended but not required. They are not torque to yield. Inspect them for any obvious defects, make sure you clean the threads with a wire wheel until they're like new, and lubricate the threads and washers/heads with clean engine oil.
Be sure to rigorously clean the holes in the block, blow them out with compressed air. Use a rifle brush and remove all debris. It is possible to hydraulic the hole in the block if there is something in the way while torquing the bolt.

the give away if they are torque to yield or "stretch bolts" is in the tq setting. if its something like "50 ftlbs + half a turn" the half a turn, is the give away. there should always be a ft-lb setting or N-m setting if they are standard bolts.

That's a good note. A lot of stretch bolts have TTY or TY stamped on the top too.

I'm hoping the stock bolts are in good shape. I think I might even have thread cleaning tappers in the right size.
I bought a complete gasket kit, including the valve stem scrapers.
Anyone know where I can buy a new oil pump for the ef10 ?

So the site admin here has banned the ip of my vpn... 46.246.49.186 Irritating.... Santaclaw, Not sure what you mean, have you gotten a message of some sort when trying to log in with your other computing devices? I would be the the one around here to do any banning I.P's. Something I have not done for some time since we had a few Spammers months ago! Tell me what kind of message you are getting?

Error 1006 Ray ID: 13edae3a0be802fd Access denied What happened?
The owner of this website (subarujusty.proboards.com) has banned your IP address (46.246.49.186).
CloudFlare Ray ID: 13edae3a0be802fd • Your IP: 46.246.49.186 • Help • Performance & security by CloudFlare
So, I just disconnected my VPN in order to post this message.
That ip was probably used by a spammer, as this particular VPN is anonymous.
No big issue, as I just have to log on via my tablet or disconnect my vpn.

check your bolts for straightness and for overall length/strain. (stress and strain are different)
you can check straightness like you would a pool cue or use a straight edge as you kinda roll it around.
checking overall length should be done from the underside of the bolt "hat" to the tip. any machine shop can do this is 20 minutes if you dont feel comfortable. a micrometer is not necessary.

I've got slide rules, both digital and analog, it would help with the original dimensions though. Again, are these still available? I prefer new ones if I can get some... Thanx for the help so far

I am just wondering if you can use some 8.8 bolts or maybe stainless steel bolts? Or there must be something mutch mutch harder?
I found only torqes for head bolts : 39Nm, then 73 Nm and then 70-77Nm.

8.8 is not grade 8. google the difference real fast. btw, i think you are kinda over thinking this. if they are straight and all the same length within what ever the factory tolerance is, just use them those are just stepped tq specs. thats really common. get some pressure on the gasket all nice and even, then tq it down. make sure you follow the bolt sequencing too. if you're hell bent on getting new head bolts, www.dustysjustys.com/home.htmgo there, go to engine, search "bolt" its 25 USD for a set.

Dustysjustys doesn't ship outside the US, and I'm not sure if it's the same bolts for the EF10 and the EF12 as the heads are completely different

1.0 and 1.2 have same blocks... I think head bolts are same too. Try ask some local Subaru dealer.
