Are you engaging/disengaging or using the 4wd on dry pavement?
That can cause it to bind and knock when you disengage.
Disengaging while turning can also make it knock.

Make sure all 4 tires are the same outer diameter and properly inflated.

i have this same noise. its the fact that you are engaging/disengaging the 4wd while in motion. what happens is the teeth on the drive gears are being driven by the motor, then when you hit the button its now being "back driven" by the teeth on the output shaft. effectively the wheels are driving that part of the trans vs the trans driving the wheels and the diff gets "spooled up" slightly. its the teeth dis engaging that causes that clunk.
picture two pieces of metal smooshed together and one slides off the other.

The noise is not normal, it indicates the front and rear axles loading up on disengagement.
Assuming you have 4 tires the exact same size, you are not currently decelerating/down shifting, you are not in a tight radius turn, and you are not currently accelerating, there will be little to no indication anything has happened. Aside from the light going out.
