I've been rebuilding this car for about a year now I finally was able to put the motor back together and add oil and coolant but it dropped solidly out of the weeping hole before I even had a chance to start it.
So I managed to take out the mechanical seal inside the water pump while in the engine bay put a new one on and same thing dripped from the hole again is there a possibility I didn't set the seal in all the way? I know the first time I hit it with a socket and hammer must of dinged it but this time I just pressed with my fingers any suggestions in how to set the seal in properly while in the car? Or should I be looking into buying another rebuilt water pump kit?
Thank you al

You really want to take the front cover off to replace that seal, it's the only way to insure you don't mess it up. Also your front cover may be cracked around the water pump hole. This is a fairly common issue on justys.

The last time I did it I found a piece of pipe that fit nicely over the ceramic disk and bottomed out on the metal cup on the seal. Then carefully pressed it in.
I too had a motor that wasn't leaking before I replaced the seal. I think I cracked the cover when I put the seal in with a hammer.

Hopefully I didn't cracked it when I first put it in how did you fix the crack just replaced it? My uncle suggested to put a thin coat of rtv around the spacer between the mechanical seal and spacer, so you just tapped it in with a metal cup and thin metal piping?

Is it possible to coat the entire water pump assembly with a layer of jb weld? I don't see any other donor cars in my area for a reasonable price
I just recently dropped a lot of money and time into rebuilding this one New .5 over pistons and rings Valves Valves seats Timing belt kit All gaskets and seals Chain and guide Rods bearings Journals Oil pump Cv Water pump kit (not working too well yet)

Just out of interest where did you get the chain, guide and valve seats from? I'm thinking about rebuilding my head and replacing the guide but Subaru have come back with prices around £150 just for the chain and guide.

Dustys justys has chains and guides too.
Good front covers are hard to come by, dustys has new ones but they're not cheap. However, you need to get the cover off to inspect it for cracks before you worry about that.
I just replaced my front cover with a spare I had. It's not really something you can fix.
I just used a pipe with the right ID and gently tapped it in with a hammer. I would highly recommend using a press though, it's much easier on the seal and cover as long as you're careful and don't go too far.

Ah it seems dustyjustys is the best place. I've visited their website loads of times but they have always been US postal service only unfortunately.

Would I need to replace the sheet metal gasket thing on the pan or could I just put a coat or rtv on it?

Just coat it in rtv, it'll be fine.

I was successfully able to put the water pump seal in this time and no leaks I'm going to drop the motor back in Friday if I can get an extra friend to come help
What I did if anybody wants to know for the future is....pull the motor and impeller used 1/4" extension for a ratchet set and lightly tapped it in a star pattern until I herd a change in pitch
