Is it the 1-2 fork?

Yep, it was the bottom one so that should be 1-2.

In theory, your shift lever is putting less force on the forks... as the length of the lever arm acting on the fork is shorter, hence the shorter throws. So unless you are using a hammer to engage the gears, I would doubt your craftsmanship is to blame Probably just the general pounding abuse trying to find a gear through the red mist Replace and carry on! And if this means you are active again, where the $#LL are the pics?

Hammer? Kind of like my heavy brass shift knob? Haha
Pics? Sure, what kind are you looking for?

That does seem weird, at least you have a couple to spare. I changed out all the seals and used silicone for the trans case when I opened my trans up. I think I changed both the R & L axle shaft bearings and the input shaft bearings. I saved the boxes and packaging things were in I can give you the numbers of what I have. I had to purchase a couple of the bearings from Subaru but the price was pretty cheap I felt like. They were like $19-20 a piece, almost asked if that was right but thought just take them . Were any of the gears hurt by the fork?

Ok great, any numbers would be awesome. I didn't see any damage to the gears, but I haven't looked that close. I need to get the car running with the 2wd trans before I dive into the rebuild. I'm not anticipating any issues there. I did however discover a potential cause for the problem when I took a close look at the fork. The (plastic?) contact patches at the tips of the fork are worn to the point that the aluminium is making contact. It's a bit hard to tell from my crappy cell phone pics, but if you look at the inside edge of the contact patches you can see shiny spots where the aluminium wore away. There is also wear in the crotch of the fork, right above the fuji symbol in the casting. So I'm thinking there may have been enough contact between the aluminium on the fork and the sleeve on the gear set to cause it to catch, stress and eventually break the fork. Especially since the side that broke is on the outside of the gear sets rotation.

Ok just went through my box of old stuff, it looks like I changed out the right axle shaft bearing and both input shaft bearings.
The front input shaft bearing (closest to clutch) I was able to source from a parts store I used carquest brand the box simply has 205 the SKU is 7 24956 43587 6
The other two , right axle shaft and rear input, I ordered from Subaru. These two seem to have two part numbers each I'll give you both sets.
First one is the input shaft rear bearing 806222060 and the second number is 63697406
Heres the right axle shaft bearing numbers 806227020 and 62764873. I think the two numbers beginning with 6 are old part numbers not sure.
Now I didnt keep any of the seals boxes so I dont have those numbers but I can tell you that my parts guy was able to source new ones just using the numbers stamped on the original seals.
I think you may have found your smoking gun there. Just enough extra friction to mess everything up. Glad to hear your gears are ok.
Hope those help, good luck

Fantastic, that'll be a big help. Thank you.
Unfortunately, at this rate it looks like it'll be a winter project. For now, it's running and driving in. I just have to figure out how to drive a fwd car at speed. It's also really weird going back to the standard shifter, I keep reaching for a lever that isn't there.

I just have to figure out how to drive a fwd car at speed. . Tis a very bizarre change isn't it... I have no advice, just I hate the Justy in 2wd, but I have not done the equal length drive shaft mod to my gen 1, and the biggest problem is the torque steer. Just don't lift, you'll be fine

It handles like a totally different car with a flick of the switch.

Well I'll find out I guess. At least I have the use of the handbrake.
I can't believe how nice that 2wd trans shifts, no synchro grinds at all.
My sx4 always had nasty torque steer, even in 4wd. I guess I've been a little spoiled by subarus.

Thanks, I just thought what would make my turbo granny wagon even better? A shifter from an early 90's econobox of course! Anyways, I wanted to consult the brain trust to make sure I'm not missing something before I move forward. So, my spare shift forks look to be high milage and not in any better shape than the one I broke. Also, the 2wd Trans I currently have in my car shifts beautifully. No synchro grinds or anything, where my 4wd is grinding most gears. That brings me to my current plan. Pull the good 2wd Trans back out of my car, gut it and put most of the internals in my 4wd case. Obviously, the final drives are different so I'd need to swap the main gears on the different as well as the shaft for the main gear set. All other gears appear to be the same. Here's some pics for your enjoyment...

Dude!!! awesome. So this means the gear box to build is... (for our accel purposes, not eco-cruise'n) 1st gen 2wd gear set, mated to a second gen final drive, 4wd box... Gives the best final drive (5.285), and the best 3-4 shift, which is the terrible one for me. May not make much difference for your car as do you ever get a chance to get into 4th? I rarely do... but when I do, it goes. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA shift buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuwaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAA I want WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA shift WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Thanks for looking into this! I need a first gen 2wd box... Anyone? Bueller? Edit, I see you have a second gen 2wd box there by the ring gear count... 4.8 ratio.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen 4th. At the last event with the 2wd box I didn't even make it to 3rd. On events that I do make it to 3rd I really struggle to accelerate.
I believe all 3 of my 2wd boxes are 2nd gen and 2 of them are pretty chewed up on the inside.
Anything else you want pics/info on while I got this apart?

Anything else you want pics/info on while I got this apart? I guess just if the pinnon gear is part of the shaft (milled) or fitted to it (looks fitted). Not that it would matter too much, but would make the whole 2wd gear set drop right in rather then pulling out the 4th's No pic required...

Man, Where do you find all of the 2 WD transmissions? I have 1 Second gen trans and would actually consider spending a few dollars to get a First gen 2WD trans. I just never see a 2 WD around here, I bet there were 20-- 4 WD 's sold to every FWD Justy around here in western Canada

I bought them off a crack head (literally) up north that had destroyed several justy's over the years. I bought out the rest of his justy parts including the two toasted 2wd boxes and the 2wd parts car.
I want to say the pinion is machined on there, but it's hard to tell. I'll attempt to remove it to see what I can learn.
