This summer i will work on preping a new justy for rallying...i will trye to post pix of every step.
step1 will be to strip it down.
step 2 will be the longuest and the most important...the shell prep...thats what make a diference between a car that will last and a car that will fold after 3 rally.
step 3 the cage....i still dont know if we will do it our self or if we will have it made ? so many good cage builder over here..i dont know wich one to choose...the DIY solution would be the best but i dont know if we will have time and its a big gamble if we farcle up we can loose more then $...
step 4 the paint....inside out
step 5 the rebuilt...
step 6....the rally......

you going to get the car Acid dipped??
If not...how you going to get all the seam sealer out of the joints before you seam weld?
The seam sealer will contaminate your welds

>you going to get the car Acid dipped??
are you mad !!? LOL acid dipped the hole frame would be way to expensiv and would probably not be possible around were i live.
>If not...how you going to get all the seam sealer out of the joints before you seam weld?
it is very easy to brush off whit a grinder and a heavy duty metal brush ....the justy sealent is very easy to get rid off...not like the VW stuff...
>The seam sealer will contaminate your welds
yaya...i read that one to...but f**k it! will see what happen?...im not to consurned about it.... i know many people that have done it and they did not have any problem...in fact...i dont know any body that acid drip there frame!?

The secret of our old justy is reveiled.... this is the master peices that holded that car togetter. this brace/bar/bumper or what ever how we can call it was under the bumper and was used to support the skid plate and tow bar hook. whit this uge and heavy thing we were able to plow in to anything...i refresh it and shee is ready to go on the new car...all the holes aligne perfecly! I also did some tuning(cut&reweld) on the struts bar so shee can fit the new car...

Well....i have been taking it easy the last month....but i got some cool stuff ready... my rear Porche 924 bilstein inserts are converted for the justy...and look very nice... www.abikeonline.com/misc/justyrearbillyssmall.jpg[/img] ooo and the oversizes front one should be on there way this week. and i got my main hoop bended....now for that one i found a hell of a good and cheap way to do it...i cut up my old hoop...its exacly what i need i just need to moove it backward. i brot my old hoop to a old guy in Ottawa that make race cars and have a good bender...he just did a replica of my old hoop...took him 30 min...he charge 30$ per hour...so he charge me 15$!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D how nice is that ?? so now i will place the hoop in the new car and use the old lateral hoop as a patern for the bend and just ad what ever metal i need more at both end ....this guys is great it wont cat me more then 60$ to have my 3 hoop bent...after that i just need to cut and notch the straigt tube were i want them ....tak everything in place and have my friend bicycle welder to melt everything nice and clean... ;D

Love the rear strut conversion to Bilstien inserts ;D So much so I'd like to do a set for my 88 Justy! I have a pair of ruptured rear struts off of an 89 Justy I'd like to use as cores. If possible could you post the part # of the bilstiens you used and also, I'd like to know how far up from the lower mounting bracket you cut the strut tube. (Did you cut the strut tube just below the weld at the top?) Also what size and thread pitch die did you use to thread the top of the strut tubes? My strut cutter and I await your reply Thanks in advance for the info. Jim

Hi Jim actualy theese struts tube are custom made...i only cut off and re welded the "ears" of the original struts. I ordered the inserts from www.ajusa.com they are from a porche 924 what ever the year they are both the same....i took the HD ones....but i mite have to get them relaved to make them work good on the justy...but for that i have to trye them...if i dotn like it..i need to have the car cornerweigthed and have somebody to do the math to find out to what setting they should be revalved to rally spec for my car. the struts tube were very easy to do...i brot the insert to a machine shop and told them to make a tube whit tread at one end and closed at the otter wen it was done i welded the "ears" my self....i did not want to buy the die fro the tread...and i wanted to make shure the insert was fitted very tite in the tube. also i wanted to use some seriously thick tubes to make shure they dont bend.

all expense calculate...these litle baby cost less the the OEM one wich we dont have te choice but to get them from subaru... for the front...the bets bet is to use Golf2 inserts....and have tubes custome made. this is what im having made for the front ;D but you could use regular golf inserts wich are the same diameter as the porche one i used in th rear.....theese fat ones mite be overkill ? will see...

Thanks so much for the info! The conversion is alot more work than I thought.....But, then again I have owned, wrenched, and modified the heck out of my 88 4wd Justy for the last 5 years. In all that time I have rarely if ever found any direct bolt on aftermarket performance pieces for the 88 Justy. There are some for the 89-95 cars but, that too is limited.
Oh Well...No sense venting my spleen..I got some some struts to build!
Thanks again, Jim

Alain, great looking work! :-) I have a Justy sitting in my barn right now waiting for some work! I don't think it'll replace my WRX rallycar, but I plan to have some fun with it. :-)
Did you flatten the front strut mounts?
Cheers! John

Hi John im not shure if i understand the question ? yes i did it my self...but its not flat..it was a pain in the ass to do...but i manage to forge it pretty good... the cage is now all welded and the car frame is on the trailler ready to be certified tomorow i desided not to put those big front gusset whit the holes...they were cool...but ? they were not needed... i caint wait for it to be certified so that i can paint it...whit this weather...and no garage...i can see the rust growing just by stairing at it...

paint! Paint! what the ? thats weight man!, no I mean that looks good, and I haven't painted my cage yet... you can't look good and be fast too!....
Hope all goes well at the scrutineering... to bad about those gussets, they sure looked cool, even if you didn't need them.
New head gasket goes in tomorrow, then I need to build a bit more skid plating before Pines... a good look at the rear swing arms showed a few too many hard dings...
Plug on and good luck
Matt
