For a small car I wasnt going to go for a high power head unit, and the 2003 am/fm/wb/cd unit fits just fine. I have a bluetooth adapter so thats all good too. The unit sounds great with the front speakers (I was shocked) but since they don't get sun baked I shouldnt be surprised Now the rear speakers. I will not put them on the rear plastic deck. That seems to leave very few options. How have people attacked this? I am looking at the sides of the cargo area as the only place left. I have looked through the site and found one post that seemed to allude to this location but really wasn't clear. Suggestions?

try good quality headphones.....i found the body in my justy is just too tinny for decent bass even with proper speaker boxes in the boot space, the body panels rattle, along with the seats, the trim, and everything else. you could try bolting speaker boxes in the rear floor space, no leg room for proper sized humans anyway. I see another problem too, I think your photo is round the wrong way, the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car

dogoman i thought I had the FSM upside down, that explains it Illegal to drive here with headphones, they dont usually enforce it, but they are getting so money hungry they will stop for anything.

interesting, the only thing they hate here is cellphones without headsets or other handsfree decvices. Headphones aren't an issue.
anyway, been giving it some thought, you could always replace the boot cover panel behind the back seats with some decent 1" ply, and mount the speakers in that with covers under them, just depends if you want to lose the space in the back.

After doing some research, I came over quite a few people making their own housings. I just want a 4 inch speaker. I was thinking of nuilding my own and have them sit in the pocket behind the rear seat belts. That would also cause the least molestation to Justy. Once the car gets cleared out of tools and parts I will see how the area under that spot works (side panel) for the same thing

as long as you don't want big bass, and just enough to drown out a massive 3 cyl at 5k revs, then 4" will be fine, try before you buy, if they sound ok in free air, they will sound better in an enclosure. I suggest the rear quarters in the boot behind the tail lights, and line the cavity with some absorbant material like dacron sheet or sheepskin to stop the sound reverberating off the body panels and making it sound all tinny and crappy.

I dont even have a sub in the outback (I find them silly in cars). Yes I just want to balance the sound out.

4"in the back? The higher the frequency the more the human ear can detect it's direction, So unless you want to feel like you are in a concert with your back to the stage, fit 6.5's minimum, and run most of the high frequency out your fronts. You don't have to run high power, but you do have to think about sound staging.

I will freely admit speakers are not one of my strong points.
What I have looked at so far -Flush mount rear package tray with discconects for tray removal. Probably the easiest way to go but I don't like it. - Make fiberglass housings to go between the rear wells and the back of the car. -Mount to the hatchback panel (would require fabrication) but I really have that as the last choice as running the wire for the power hatch release was no joy.
Again under the "I admit freely I just have enough knowledge to be dangerous" in this area, what about dual voice coil speakers. I know thay are used as a solution to put stereo speakers in a mono-speaker location on classic cars.
Or Is just plan A the best and least elegant.

Found a solution, so simple so elegant, just had to think a bit out of the (speaker) box. i will post pics here when i do it. I bought a pair of pioneer speakers 4 inch. I went to a craft store and purchased two wooden "memories" boxes that are 4". The speakers fit in them perfectly. I also bought felt that matched the color the Justy seats.

I've tossed around the idea of sticking some small but powerful speakers in the headrests fiero-style. Has anyone tried this? if i could get my hands on some seats that i could tinker with... mrmikes.com/fierospeakers.htm

I actually fit some 6" behind the rear wheels in the panels. They look good and sound good.

I looked at that, but running the wires for the power lock was such a PITA i didnt want to go through that again
