As previously mentioned the brushes I have are worn to different lengths.
Any one else had this happen? It looks like one of the slip rings is discolored. Any one seen this? This could account for the different wear levels.
Any idea if these can be cleaned? Or do they need to be replaced?
Thanks

The brushes wearing to different lengths is completely normal. I see this all the time in alternators. I think it has something to do with the flow of electrons. I can't remember if it's the positive or the negative that wears more. Solder in a new set of brushes and give it a try. I believe they are Nippondenso alternator brushes. I get them for $2 a pair at a local starter/alternator rebuild shop. This has worked for me every time so far.

Well I found some brushes for $5 and installed them. No joy, it looks like we are off to the repair shop. Let's hope the bill isn't too high.
Thanks for the tips.
