Without pulling it out - is this simply an o-ring? When my car is running, I see a drop of oil every few seconds coming off the dizzy. Seems like it's coming out of the shaft area. Hoping there is just an o-ring in there I can replace.

are you talking about where it mates to the head? if so then yes.
the dizzy is driven by an off center slot in the cam that mates up to a corresponding "wafer" on the back side of the dizzy.
interestingly enough i need to replace this seal too. i did the internal seal and i think i either buggered this one up or the fact that its 20 years old it sort of just wore out.
its quite large by the way.

The block-to-distributor housing seal is just an O-ring. If the oil is inside the distributor, you have a bit of an issue. There is a rotational seal in there (like a cam or crank seal) but it is very tiny and not easy to cross with any numbers. I remember the shaft diameter was 12mm or 12.5, the outside was around 22mm and the depth was 4mm or 5mm. It matched that of an old Altima distributor inner seal. I went through this with my carb engine, and never resolved my issue. Luckily my EFI distributor from justyjuggler does not leak. ;D Terry

its 22x13x5-7 i sat 5 - 7 because the depth doesnt really matter that much given the design

Awesome - thanks so much for the info!! Yes - it's leaking from where it mates to the head, and then dripping off the lowest points. Inside is clean.

My internal shaft seal leaks as well...and has been for quite some time. Just another Justy oil leak to periodically clean up...it doesn't seem to affect the engine performance at all...as long as the oil doesn't get on the rotor tips...it basically lays in the bottom of the cap until I wipe it up.

I take it all back... Pulled the cap, and it was a bit oily inside with one contact actually wet with oil. The rotor tip was also a bit oily. So there's my miss! This is odd because I replaced the gasket on the cap about 10k miles ago when I bought the car and did the normal routine maintenance you need to do on a Justy to make up for the previous owner's neglect combined with gratuitous use of silicone in the wrong places (eg, cam cover gasket, dizzy cap gasket, cap/rotor/plugs/wires, fuel filter, air filter). Anyway, I pulled the cap, rotor, and gasket - cleaned the dizzy out, cleaned everything really well and put it back together. The car is a whole new beastie and runs way smoother/stonger now. I will keep an eye on the distributor oil level, and have a new o-ring on the way. I remember I also replaced this o-ring on my '91, and it only had 49k miles on it. This one is near 140k and I am sure it's original (like the timing belt was). Hmm. Well, oil leaks in general both me because it is my view that most of the oil should stay in the engine. Also, if a substantial amount of oil leaks out there will be a significant affect to engine performance. It would take a while for that to happen, but with only 3 qts in the engine I have seen my old '91 turn up with alarmingly low oil. In my case though, oil is dripping from the distributor onto a coolant hose below it, then splashing on the exhaust manifold I am assuming when at speed, making nasty burned oil smells in the car when sitting at traffic lights. That's just annoying, although it is a reminder that your little Suby is still very alive I will say.

one thing you can do, if you really dont want to replace the seal, you could just drill a small hole in the dizzy cap to let the oil actually leak out and not wet the rotor/cap. but then its gonna be on the trans and the ground.

Nothing a bit of silicon tubing and a catch bottle wont fix.

Crap, now my '91 is leaking in the same exact manner - oil is literally staining the tranny below the dizzy (tranny looked like new as it was rebuilt by Suby of Santa Cruz a few years ago). This post was originally about my '93 w/ almost 100k more miles.

Yeah if you have one that works, I would like to know! If you want, I can paypal or something to cover the o-ring and shipping. We got one from Subaru but it's far too big, and came in an opened bag so not sure what's up there. I think the original one is no longer available, but I wanted my shop to just pull the dizzy and find one that works!

Woo - I found one from Subaru. The part number is 22176KA000 and you can order it online from Subaruparts.com. That is just the EFI one. Carb is a different number.

I just swapped the entire distributor. Could not find a proper replacement for the seal.

Well, it's been replaced, and there is no more leak. So, I am going to put some miles on it as we track down other leaks, and then it will be time to replace the clutch. Looks nice!

Well, it looks like it's leaking from the inside now. I appreciate the info on the inner seal, and we are going to see if we can find something that works. Thanks!

I had same situ, pulled distributor apart, used old O-ring to get equivalent from general assortment at parts store. HOWEVER, Do what I didn't: mark well the "floppy" tag & ring position to the shaft. The distributor will only go in 1 way, but the tag & ring can be 180 out. I puzzled over this for 2 months, chasing all kinds of other things.

I just picked up my reman Cardone distributor today. Hope it works out! Still got oil pouring on my bellhousing, though not as strong as before the O-Ring swap.
