On my OUtback, I have a rack that goes into a class II/III reciever. This is a nice fold down rack so I can open the tailgate.
I have found Justy Hitches, Class I, with just the ball. Not only is this hitch pricey, but the bike rack for it does not fold out of the way for the hatch. It also is not easily removed.
A roof Rack is out of the question.
Suggestions or solutions?

Those universal hatchback bike racks work ok. Clips go over the top of the hatch, and hang the bike rack below the window. Kind of a pain, but the only option if you don't want something on the roof. I carry two bikes on the roof all the time. Why not?

An injured back i just cant handle a heavy hybrid on and off the roof. That makes sense. Sorry to hear because the Justy works great with racks. Here's an outing with both the roof (Thule) and the hatchback rack (Saris) in use: Seems like a hitch-rack would add too much weight OR block the tailgate. The Thule setup is nice, tilts down and everything but weighs half a Justy. The Saris setup is the one I would suggest, but it only carries two bikes. It is by far the smallest/lightest hitch setup that I know of anyway. I am talking specifically about the "Saris Thelma 2-bike" system. Do some searching on that one and see what you think. I just feel any other will be too heavy.
