Is a 1988 Subaru justy engine an interference engine? My timing belt just broke and im wondering if i am screwed?

I was told my motor was an interference motor. Which, meant, as it was told to me, if you get the motor all setup, and you go to start it up, and if the timing is not correct that first try, and you start it, and it's not correct, you farcle it up...from then on, in a sense. I dunno...kinda wild. That's what happened to me, we thought we got it, then we got the right specs, and it was never the same. Jimmy

Jimmy An interference motor means that the valves maximum travel and piston's max travel would interfere with eachother if the timing somehow is thrown off and the valves are open when the piston is at its max height. Its most commonly an issue for cars with timing belts, if the belt brakes on an interference motor it usually results in some pretty severe internal engine damage.
