Hi, just picked up a pristine 40k mile Justy 4x4 w/ ECVT. It has the following problems :
On occasion, it revs then lurches around 2500 rpms, other times it takes off fine.
When slowing down, it almost locks the wheels up, almost like it downshifted too early (although I know it doesnt have gears etc).
Also, at 55mph its turning 3400 rpms, which seems high, the chart I saw showed 2900. It does not seem to be slipping, just running too many rpms.
Fluid was perfectly clear, although I changed it and filter. Checked brushes, plenty of meat, so those seem fine.
Any tips or possibilities?
Thanks

Thanks This problem could be caused by a malfunctioning/sticky valve body. It could also be caused by a cracked pulley hub which requires a complete tear down. The valve bodies are quite simple in design but require an exact disassembly and reassembly sequence. I've done a few successfully so it isn't too hard. These CVT's aren't always easy to diagnose and get functioning properly. But when you get one to work well they generally outperform the 5 speeds in both acceleration and fuel economy. At least that's been my experience with them, yours may differ.

Good info, thanks! When I pulled the filter the valve body seemed to be right there, I have done some automatic transmission work in the past so I would imagine the valve body would not be too foreign to me.
Is there a way to inspect the chain and pulleys without trans removal / dissassembly? Assuming those look good, and my pump pressures are solid, I am thinking I should replace the valve body.
It does seem to be pressure related.
The car has such low mileage its hard to imagine the pulleys / chain being worn out at this point, or the pump having low pressure.

If you've worked on valve bodies from conventional automatics you'll have no problems with this one. There's not much in their! Look for scored or sticking pistons. If you find a place to purchase new valve bodies for the 4wd ECVT let us know. I haven't found any yet so I've always had to make due with used ones.
You can shine a light up into the tranny and look at the belt and pulleys, but you're not going to see a whole lot. If the pulley faces are damaged it should be visible. Cracks probably won't be noticable though.
Let us know what you find.

Anyone have a spare valvebody? Opened up and pressure control valve looks scored but wish I had a good one for comparison!

I just opened up the tranny on my 91 eCVT. I'd be happy to send any photos to you that I can. I live in Abbotsford, BC, Canada, don't know if that's near you at all. The tranny is in parts in the garage, so let me know what you want. If I don't get back to you quickly (I sometimes forget to check the forums for a while) send me a PM as a reminder. Or send me an email at jonbabbitt@gmail.com.
