Hello, First post here. Bought a 1990 Justy 4wd with ECVT (Not sure about the decision). The car will go on level ground for a while but will not climb any small grade or hill after warmed up. It will stall out and the red Clutch Temp light will start beeping. Got codes 21 and 31 from the red clutch temp light. I am thinking the trans may be bad but hoping not. Any help would be appeciated.

Code 31 is for the accelerator switch located on the gas pedal. Code 21 is "torque signal system", which is a signal from the engine controller. Check the pressure switch (MAP sensor) and the vehicle speed sensor (in gauge cluster) and wiring.
Usually a slipping clutch type of condition is due to worn or oily clutch brushes. Pull them out and have a look. They're located under the starter.

Where is the Map sensor located? I will check the brushes but I believe they are new. I found a used ecvt for $400/. Should I risk it? They will not offer warranty. Bob

The problems you described earlier sound like a clutch/controller related issue, not a tranny issue. $400 seems a little high for a tranny with no guarantee. The MAP sensor is located next to the wiper motor. See green arrow below.

Justy 4X4- Kudos on your impressive vehicle and engine bay. I appreciate your input. How would I go about troubleshooting for a bad clutch controller situation? I checked the brushes and they look almost new with no oil or residue on them. My Haynes manual seems pretty useless at this point. I have the 2 ECVT manuals downloaded from DustysJustys.com. To reiterate, the car does not seems to want to go up any sort of incline after it is warmed up. It will stay in low ratio but when it finally switches out of low ratio and the rpms drop it will not go anywhere. Have had it towed a couple times already and have only owned it a couple weeks. Any methodological troubleshooting program to follow would be of help. Thanks again, Bob Avella, PA ;D

If the tranny is sticking in low gear then there is a mechanical problem with the transmission itself. I'm going to guess that when it does finally shift up that it goes all the way into high gear and the engine simply can't pull it at your current speed? This condition can over heat the clutch and cause the light to come on. It sounds like your valve body might need a thorough inspection and cleaning. If anything is scored or otherwise damaged in it you'll need to find a replacement.

Is there a way to get to the control valve body without pulling the transmission or dropping the transmission pan? Let me know if you can and I will pull it this weekend and give it a cleaning and check for damage. What is a good cleaner to use? I am hoping that this transmission is not bad but we will have to see. Thanks again, Bob Avella, PA

You have to drain the fluid and drop the pan. Not at all a hard job but it can get messy.
Non chlorinated brake cleaner works well. The valve body is very simple but it does have to come apart and go back together in a certain order.

I just changed the fluid and the filter last weekend. It looked very clean but the fluid smelled burnt. Not sure what to look for. I wish I could find a good shop around that I could take the transmission . If I remove the transmission can I get it out by itself or do I have to take the engine out as well? Bob

The engine has to come out with the tranny.
What did you use for tranny fluid?

Don't use Dextron in a CVT. I used it in the past and experienced a variety of problems over time. Shuddering and burnt fluid come to mind. Try this stuff www.eneos.us/product/7 it works great! Your valve body is still going to need to come apart, unfortunately.

Justy 4x4 and all other Forum members, I am going to remove the control valve body tommorrow.(2/6/2010) Are there any special tools required? Not sure which bolts to remove to get the unit out. I know where it is located but your experience would be helpful to everyone here. If you have an ECVT transmission, I am sure you will encounter some issues along the way. Any pictures or diagrams would be great. Thanks gin, Bob Avella, PA I will post pictures once I get the control valve assembly out.

Pulled the transmission today. Turns out the powder clutch assembly is burnt/scorched. I have a replacement transmission that I bought for $245 with a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty that I am installing. However, I busted the brush holder assembly when putting it in. Anyone know the part number so that I can order one? I need to get it quick if anyone has it that would be great. Thanks, Bob

I found an ad on Craigslist. Then I called the number listed. Turns out they have a website called foreignengines.com. They might just have what you are looking for. Nice people and quick turnaround. Highly recommend them. They re out of the State of Washington. Give em a try. Bob Pennsylvania
