RRJ- Thanks for confirming. Your time and thoughts here are very much appreciated! You and badshah agree that I have a missing ground.
HOWEVER... I'm using my tester as a jumper here. When I apply the "jumper" to the ground wire of my defroster bulb, the tester lights up, NOT the defroster bulb. If there was a ground missing, don't you think the defroster bulb would light up along with all the other dash bulbs when I apply the ground jumper?
Why does the tester light up and not the defroster bulb when i apply the "jumper"??
I know this is tedious, thanks for your patience!

OK, I read power on my dimmer. **badshah** and I were both right about the lack of ground and wrong about where the ground comes from. The ground is supposed to be variable on this circuit. The Red w/black wire is the power (from fuse#2) when the parking lights are on. The Red w/blue wire shows voltage when I "dim" the lights, and has no voltage when they are bright. The dimmer is a low voltage control input for a more complex circuit ( I am still trying to find where the 2-yellow 1-green wire go from the dimmer control). Every dash light always has power, the variable is the ground, controlled elsewhere. The yellow wires on the dimmer control only read ~1 volt.
Just for you I grounded the Red w/blue wire behind the dimmer to ground, all the dash lights came on bright. To confirm your lighting circuit is good, you should be able to repeat this. Then it leaves us to what controls the illumination ground? I am searching the schematics again to find what module actually grounds the illumination.

Very nice RRJ, cleared up for me. Maybe we can put all the schematics that anyone has some place on this forum.

This was bugging me so I dragged my lazy back out to the car and followed the illumination dimmer wiring back to find the control module. look to the three yellow wires going into a black module There is the black ground, red/blue variable ground, red/black power, yellow + yellow/red (found same color on the dimmer) and yellow/green (what the dimmer green wire becomes after a connector) I think that while installing the radio, you have crossed power to the red/blue wire shorting this module out. Found it for ~44$US www.worldimpex.com/parts/subaru-pt122789-illum-contr_1999199.html <--- these cats are in MD. I am sure somebody on these boards can sell you a used one, or take a lucky day in the pick-lot. If I run across one when at the pick-lot this weekend I will grab it for you, and only charge you shipping. -RRJ

Very nice RRJ, cleared up for me. Maybe we can put all the schematics that anyone has some place on this forum. All the schematics I have cover every other light and circuit in the darned car, just not the illumination?? I bet the factory service manual would have the complete schematics, my tech publications are a CD-ROM + online manual. -Oh well -RRJ

Any idea about the purpose of this device? If it is solid state electronics inside (transistor switching ground), then it would be very efficient at putting out the same stable voltage even if you had a few blown bulbs in the circuit, and it would generate less heat than the ol' resistor+high wattage rheostat. It would be great if it was just a diode within the module. -great link BTW good find. -RRJ

Nice one guys. Cheers to your finding the module. I called a few salvage yards with no luck, including the Subaru yard here in Sacramento. I'll pull it out for a peek inside before I replace.
RRJ- If you see one at Pick-n-Pull. Will you cut it out for me, and I'll surely reimburse you for your efforts? I'll start looking through the forum for it too. Any ideas as to interchangability with other models?
Thanks a million guys. We should all meet up in Pakistan for a cold one on me!

Well CRAP! After much investigation I have come to the conclusion that my 1988 does not have an illumination control module. I have given it a serious look and I have bruises and scratches on my head to prove it. I traced the wires from the dimmer and they run directely into the blue connecter, then up into the dash. LAME! What now?? Attachments:

The part number is listed as the same module for 87-94 Justys, My red roo is a 1990 gen2, yours may just have the module located in a different place. Be patient friend, I know what a fun bit it is to be inverted in your seat with your head jammed in the pedals (flashlight in the teeth) poking around in a spaghetti-monster of wiring. You will find it I'm sure. -RRJ -edit The first part number found 783023021 for the 87-94 Justy Found a second part number for it (dealership) 83023-AA010, or 783023021 for the 1985-1994 Loyale (I will add the Loyale to my pick-lot search)

Where is this in a Loyale? I have a few of them lying around.

If anyone can help guide me to the illumination control module, I would surely appreciate it. I have scoured the underdash looking for it. I have followed the wires from the dimmer to the blue connecter and up into the dash with no luck. Is it inside the dashboard?

I'l looked at everything under the entire dash. The only thing that looks remotely like the ill. module is the two clear boxes in my picture. The end snaps off and there is a cuircuit board inside of them. Should I give up now? Take it to a mechanic? Attachments:

HA! I fixed it; but not the way I would have hoped.
I ended up going to Radio Shack and buying some 12 volt LED lights. I took the top off of the insrument panel (dash) and rigged the new lights up so they point down through the light holes onto the instruments, then I spliced them into the lighting curcuit under the dash. VIOLA! I can now see how fast (or slow!) I'm going at night.
I had to get something done, I do alot of night driving. It works fine, but I'm still open to learning where my gull durned illumination control module is. I swear it must be hidden real good on the 1988 model.
Peace!
Thanks everyone for all the input here.

For temporary, you can ground the Red w/blue stripe wire on the back of your dimmer control, it would keep your stock dash lights on "full" when your parking lights are on. This is just temporary till you can get to replacing the control module.
I am still keeping an eye out for a used control module for you. I'll let you know. -RRJ
