hello all. First post hooray! ok I have a 1989 carbureted justy 5 spd 4WD. it is very hard to find information about the carburation on this car... was it right before they went to EFI? anywho... my car runs incredibly rich. Plugs all carboned up, soot in the tailpipe, and if the engine is cold-coolish a small to medium amount of black smoke. I did the OBD thing and got error code 14. I looked it up with a quick google search, and couldn't find any information, only info for >1988 with single port fuel injection. Is this the same as electronically controlled carburetor? anyway it said 14--abnormal fuel output. well THAT was sure helpful. any ideas? I'm kind of frustrated with 25mpg out of a 3 cyl. hehe thanks for any ideas you guys might have.

Code 14 is for the duty solenoid valve, which is located in the carburetor. This valve is controlled by the computer and opens and closes to adjust the mixture. The default position for the valve is full rich when no power is sent to it. You might want to check electrical connections and go from there. Also check the resistance of the duty solenoid valve. If it's less than 10 ohms or more than 100 ohms, it's junk.

before I got on here to read your reply, I went and bought a new O2 sensor... the one in there couldn't have been in good shape-- it looked like the original. Maybe it didn't help, but it couldn't have hurt... and once I get the duty solenoid valve thing resolved, it should help.
My question, though, is how to test the duty solenoid valve. I looked up its location in my repair manual, and it appears to be in the middle of the carb. So to test it, I figured I'd test at the wiring harness that goes to the carb. My manual has no data on which wire is which though... the wires coming out are: 1 blue, 1 black, 1 pair, red and black, and one pair, yel/blk and yel/wht. Does anybody know which pair goes to the duty solenoid valve?
the blue goes to the anti-dieseling switch. thet's the only thing I know for sure. the yel/black, yel/wht pair reads exactly 5k ohms, and the red, black pair reads 39 ohms.
Thanks.
Also, if I do have to replace it, is it a daunting task worthy of the labor fees of a subaru dealer? Or do you think your average grease monkey armed with a set of hand tools and some common sense (me) could handle it?

Changing the O2 sensor is usually a good idea. I believe the two wires coming from the duty solenoid are yel/blk and yel/wht. I'll do some more checking tomorrow.

well I went to the Pull-N-Save junkyard yesterday and tore apart a justy carb. I tested 3 different solenoids and they all read 43 ohms, compared to my 5,000. so I took the solenoid from a very crashed justy (for $1 ;D) and plan on installing it in my car sometime soon before I go through too much liquid gold. Er, gas. Any pointers on doing this? it seemed to be pretty straightforward on the one I took apart, looks like all I'll need is a new gasket... I'm not sure what the name for it is but it's the biggest gasket that goes between the two halves of the carb. Anyway any words of wisdom from you more experienced mechanics that might save me from a headache would be greatly appreciated. This car doubles as my daily driver and the car I am learning to fix cars on I think it'll make me a better mechanic though because I CAN'T screw up or I don't have a car Thanks, Tyler

:'I too have a long standing fuelling problem with the carburation on my 1991 4WD Sumo (Justy) van which dissappeared after I left it standing for a year -Right now it runs so rich that I have to put my hand behind the carb to hold the air flap fully open to get the engine to run at all. My Subaru dealers says 'bring it in' but it's so rich it won't drive. Did you manage to fix yours after changing the duty solenoid valve?. A friend suggests that the carb is 'overfuelling'. Could this be a faulty pressure regulator-if so, where is this regulator located-in the tank, perhaps?

Recently my wife was traveling behind the justy in her truck and she said it smelled really rich and she couldn't stand it so she went a different route. I don't have a check engine light but I have been getting terrible fuel mileage lately 25mpg vs 32-36ish, I noticed while fixing a few grounds I knew were bad that with the key on it and engine off I can here a sound similar to a injector firing or a fuel pump pumping. I read a bit about the Duty solenoid on the forums here and It seems noise seems to be coming from it. I unplugged it and hooked a test light up to the body side of the plug and its pulsing a signal. Is this normal? I installed a new O2 Sensor, Replaced the computer with a justy that ran great. I have not OHM'ed out the duty solenoid yet But since its pulsing from the body side of the harness it makes me think theres something wrong elsewhere and possibly not the duty solenoid. Thanks`
